Tim Burton

by Audrey Mattson from San Diego, California in United States

One person's crazyness is another person's reality.

Everything in this room is edible. Even I'm edible. But, that would be called canibalism. It is looked down upon in most societies.

Visions are worth fighting for. Why spend your life making someone else's dreams

Tim Burton was a California-raised kid fantasizing about new movie ideas. Burton was born on August 25, 1958, and was raised in sunny Burbank, California. His favorite pastime activities were playing in graveyards and an attraction to romantic ideas of death. Tim became famous for some of his movies such as, Batman, Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands, and Nightmare Before Christmas. However before all of these well known movies, his first ever movie was horror movie homage Frankenweenie in 1984. After some of his movies got popular he was hired at Disney and that was a big leap in his career. However, his career is a huge part of his life all together. A hero must be passionate about what they are doing with their lives however they also must be very creative about what they do. For instance, Tim Burton is extremely creative with the way he makes his movies. Tim Burton’s passion for the film industry and his unending creativity helped create iconic works of art which today are still seen as pivotal developments in the art community.

He had dreamed for years of making movies and now that he is finally in the industry he is still as passionate as ever making movies. Burton has had his ups and downs through the years, but his passion for movies and art is what made him feel less alone. “A self-confessed loner who liked to make eight-millimeter movies in the backyard with the family camera,” Burton stated in Vogue: "I was into the same stuff as all kids, looking in people's windows at night.... But I have a feeling I took it more seriously. To the other kids it was a hobby. For me it was a way of life!" (Tim Burton, UXL Biographies). Tim Burton has been making movies since he was a little boy so he has known for years what his dreams were for the future.  He also broke so many rules of the film industry that they took the rules down. Burton has made some great movies out of book series which have become a beautiful masterpiece - for instance, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. "I got the book as an unpublished manuscript and read it the same day" Topping said via email. "I sent it to Peter Chernin, who also read it immediately and fell in love with it. We sold it to Fox. Peter Chernin and I then got a plane to go see Tim Burton [in the U.K.], who was very intrigued by the book. We pitched the idea of Jane Goldman to adapt, which he loved and subsequently signed on officially.” (Miss Peregrine producers home in on Burton, Variety). He has a certain genre of movies he makes and that is thrillers but not horror, he makes his movies more eerie than regular films and how he portrays that is by the lighting. I got the book as an unpublished manuscript and read it the same day. Topping said via email. "I sent it to Peter Chernin, who also read it immediately and fell in love with it. We sold it to Fox. Peter Chernin and I then got a plane to go see Tim Burton [in the U.K.], who was very intrigued by the book. We pitched the idea of Jane Goldman to adapt, which he loved and subsequently signed on officially?' (Miss Peregrine producers home in on Burton, Variety). Burton read the manuscript for Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children and fell in love with it and knew he had to make that manuscript into a movie. Burton, who became interested in drawing and filmmaking while quite young, attended the California Institute of the Arts and later worked as an animator at Disney Productions (Tim Burton, Encyclopaedia Britannica).  However then when he was working at Walt Disney Studios, he stated, “The executives were so concerned about what the late Walt Disney himself would think of their work that he and his friends held a mock séance to try to bring back Disney's spirit. They failed.” (Tim Burton, Encyclopaedia Britannica). His co-workers and him tried to bring the happy spirit of Walt Disney. All they wanted was to bring Disney back. After all his education and hard work he has been in the industry for years. Tim has been using his creations of art and his passion throughout his life.

Burton is most known for his movies however most don’t know he also has a degree in art because he is a very creative mind. Tim Burton is known most for two things, his movies and his art style for instance. “A 2009 book by Leah Gallo called The Art of Tim Burton, also features some of Burton's illustrations. The book is a comprehensive collection of Burton's artistic work over four decades.” (Tim Burton, UXL Biographies). His art style is so iconic that someone made a book of his sketches. He not only has a book full of his art, he also has a whole museum full of his art. Burton has a certain genre he goes for and one book was exactly the genre he does and the book that he made into a movie is called Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. "'Miss Peregrine's reminds me of some of Tim's early work, like 'Edward Scissorhands.' Miss Peregrine herself evokes a kind of twisted Mary Poppins. [There's a] time-lapse sequence, which is one of the most visually arresting in the movie, that reminds me of a Magritte painting." (Miss Peregrine producers home in on Burton, Variety). Burton made sure the movie wasn’t all the same as the book however still true to the plot line. He also used the lighting to make the movie more eerie and he makes his so out of the ordinary. Tim also created something into an eerie soap opera. “Dark Shadows (2012), a comedic interpretation of a cult-favourite soap opera from the 1960s.” (Tim Burton, Encyclopaedia Britannica). This soap opera was one like no one has seen before. Tim tried the area of soap operas however he is more known for his movies. He also got his own art museum. “That same year, the Museum of Modern Art in New York opened an exhibition of Burton's art. The exhibit offered "the entire range of his creative output, including his sketchbooks, concept art, drawings, paintings, photographs, and amateur films," according to information released by the museum. A similar exhibition was held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2011.” (Tim Burton, Newsmaker). His art is one of the most well known art styles in the art community. Burton has always been creatively minded and every piece of art or movie he makes it just makes him more creative every day.

For example, in Ransom Riggs he stated, “Riggs describes himself as a "lifelong fan" of Burton's work and cited him as a "creative influence during the writing of the book."” (Miss Peregrine producers home in on Burton, Variety). Ransom Riggs who is the author of my favorite book series has also been a fan of Burton for years, when they collaborated for the movie Miss Peregrine's home for Peculiar Children, Riggs actually was inspired by some of Burton’s work to write his own books. Another example is he has been making movies for decades for instance this states. “With several blockbuster hit movies to his credit during the 1980s and 1990s, Tim Burton, director of Batman and creator of Nightmare before Christmas, emerged as a leading filmmaker whose pictures exude a macabre creativity unique in the industry.”  (Tim Burton, DISCovering Biography). His works are so original and amazing that his career has been strong for years. Burton has been such an inspiration for decades for me. Tim’s movies are what made me wish to be a director in the film industry because I can connect with his movies and art style. He has a way to truly connect with his audience and no matter how crazy his ideas are he always finds a way to connect. Finally, I believe for many years more. Tim Burton will always be an inspiration to others and myself and we’ll never forget that.
