"A sister is like yourself in a different movie, a movie that stars you in a different life."
- Deborah Tannen
My hero is my sister, Vivian Wong. She is a big inspiration to me and a role model that I look up to. Many people believe that a hero is someone who rescues others from danger or someone who helps the world become more at peace. My sister is a different perspective of hero; she inspires me to be the person I am today and has impacted a big part of my life. She overcomes her fear of restarting her life at a country she has never been to and becomes more mature and responsible.

She was born in Hong Kong, China but soon moved to California with our family around her teenage years. Since then, she had to completely change her lifestyle and adapt to a new environment where she did not even know how to speak English. She has gone through many obstacles throughout her life.

During her high school years, she struggled with her social life and education. Her English was not as fluent as other students at the school and that led her to not have the courage to make friends. Her room was where she would let out all her inner feelings. She did not have the interest to come out of her room because of how her whole life changed. However, she thought to herself that she did not want to live the rest of her life like this. She wanted to change and do something about it.
“There could be people who are in the same situation as me.” she thought. Therefore, she found some friends who were in the same position as her. They started hanging out every day and made sure she felt comfortable in her new school. Making new friends is definitely a hard thing to do. Having the courage to approach someone new is one of my goals now.

As she got older, she become more responsible and mature enough to take care of me. When my mother is not available, my sister was always there even on her busy days. “Did you finish your homework?” “Go take a shower now, it’s getting late.” she says while finishing up her work. She can be mother-like but also like the same age as me. “Let’s play one more game of monopoly, please!” We always have each others backs and include each other in different situations. I am thankful for her for being both my sister and my hero.
