"Freedom is best I tell thee of all things to be won than never live within the bonds of slavery." These are the true words of a hero. William Wallace was a Scottish hero around 1272. His fathers death was a very big contribution too his life long passion of being a Scottish hero. A hero to me is someone who fights for the cause of many people and not just to there benefit. William Wallace is my hero.

William Wallace was born near Ellerslie Scotland. He was born around 1270. His wife was killed after he got into a brawl with the English troops in town. His brother died with his father in the skirmish with the English troops. In 1291 they were both killed in the skirmish. Alexander the third had been on the throne for 20 years when Wallace was born. It was a great time of peace. The death of his father at the hands of the English contributed to his life long passion to fight for his country.

Wallace's skills were described as "All powerful as a swordsman and unrivaled as an archer." his blows were unerring. King Edward the 1st underestimated the Scots belief in their own sovereignty. Edward demanded that three Scottish castles on the border but John De Balliol didn't obey. Edward marched north with his armies. After a 5 month campaign he conquered Scotland. Wallace was involved in a fight with local soldiers in Ayr. He was left to starve in a jail afterwards. his support grew and his attacks broadened. In May 1297, he avenged his father's death by killing 30 men and their commander.

On August 5,1305, Wallace was betrayed by a Scottish knight. On the 23 of August in 1305 he was executed. Wallace was hung by the neck but not before being disemboweled alive. He was decapitated and his head was stuck on a pike and stuck at London Bridge. The right arm at New-castle upon Tyne. His left arm at Berwick. His left leg at Aberdeen and his right leg at Perth. Almost immediately after Robert the 1st revived the rebellion and won Scottish freedom in around 1306 and was crowned king. On his way to reconquer Scotland, Edward died near Callerslie.

This hero, William Wallace, is a hero to me because he showed so many people what freedom was like. He helped the Scottish realize why they should fight for their freedom. He lived a hero's life and died like he was a traitor but he was not a betrayer. He fought for what he believed in. His men and the people of Scotland created statues to honor the hero of Scotland. To think that this happened over almost 800 years ago and we still remember it.
