George Weah

by Samuel from Cedar Grove, New Jersey

Simone Weil once said, “To be a hero or a heroine one must give an order to oneself.” A hero is a person who works hard to achieve a great deed. Many heroes possess great and unique qualities to complete their task to help other people, such as caring, confidence, helpfulness, intelligence, fearlessness, reliability, and inspiration. George Weah, a hero in Liberia, is a soccer star who worked tirelessly to help his war torn country.

In 1995, Weah was named FIFA World Player of the Year, European Soccer Player of the Year, and African Soccer Player of the Year. Weah was named by Pele as one of the top 125 greatest soccer players in March, 2004. Weah tries to use soccer as a way to bring happiness to the people of Liberia. He created a CD called “Lively up Africa” with eight other African soccer stars. The proceeds from this CD went to children’s programs in the countries of athletes involved.

Weah has won many awards such as the African Player of the Year Award; he won that award three times in 1989, 1994, and 1995. Then in 1998, Weah won the African Player of the Country Award. Weah has also run successfully in the 2005 Presidential election in Liberia.

George Weah has many qualities that have helped people in Liberia. He can be described as kind, hard working, caring, and fearless. He is kind to the people in Liberia and also caring to them. Weah is also very hard working to help rebuild Liberia. He has never given up to help rebuild Liberia. That’s why Weah is fearless.

A hero could be a celebrity or not. All heroes do not need to be famous. George Weah, a hero of Liberia, has many good qualities of a hero, and he is a famous soccer player.
