Welles Crowther

by Noah Short from Mrs. Safreed's Room

Welles Crowther was born in New York City, NY, on May 17, 1977. Since he was a little boy, he always wanted to be a firefighter. Both of his grandfathers were firefighters and they took Welles to the work site. When Welles was four his dad gave him a red handkerchief. He wore it all the time when he played sports when he went to school. The sports he played were football, hockey, and lacrosse. He had a good childhood, then he went off to collage. He went to Boston College and shared a room with one of his friends. He got a scholarship for lacrosse and played really well. He had a fun time in college. When he got out of college, he worked the South Tower of the World Trade Center. He was really high up, around 100 flours up. He enjoyed working there for a few years. He was making good money and met a lot of nice people. Then one day he called his dad and said he did not want to work there anymore. He said that if he had to stare at the screen his whole life, he would go insane. He had a good plan with his savings and everything, so his dad agreed. Later that night he went on a boat trip with his dad and some firefighters. He was not near his dad for a few hours, and his dad was wondering what he was doing. Welles came up with a former firefighter and he said that they had been talking. Welles and the former firefighter took a picture and in the background were the Twin Towers. For a few weeks everything was normal, but then one night his mom Allison had a weird feeling. She could not sleep or eat; she felt terrible. The next day Welles woke up and went to work in the South Tower. Then around 9:00 the first plane hit the North Tower. Everyone was confused no one knew what was happening. A lot of people thought it was an accident. Welles' parents called Welles and he said that he was okay. Then the second plane hit the South Tower, not even 20 minutes later. Welles was okay; he found the stairs and would have gotten out. He decided to stay in there and help other people get to safety. The first time he saved multiple people and he brought them down to safety. He also could have gotten out there too, but he went back up to help more people. Sadly, a little bit later, the tower collapsed. Welles' parents new that Welles had died. The reason the people knew that Welles saved them was because of the red bandanna that he was wearing. This went around the whole world. The president knew and the whole world also knew. Welles was famous. Now there is a book about him and a movie. Welles is an amazing person.
