Winston S. Churchill

by Charlie from Fredericksburg

I think a hero is a person who is very courageous in a way. I also think that a hero is a person who doesn’t go around bragging that he’s a hero. Also a person who doesn’t just stops doing great things but continues to do it. I believe that a hero must also be a person whose name is carried though history. I also consider that a hero is someone who can make good jokes, quotes, and sayings in history.

For a person who would achieve many great things in life started his I a very unusual way. Winston Spencer Churchill was born in Oxfordshire, England in 1874. In his earliest years he lived in Dublin, Ireland as a young child and left when Ireland tried to gain independence. Winston wasn’t entirely successful as a young person either. It took him three times to pass the entrance exam into college and he kept trying and was very determined. He went to Oxford for sometime and then joined the British Royal cavalry and served as a lieutenant. When Churchill turned 21 he was able to spend his birthday searching for a rebel army hiding in Cuba, which is not how most of us, spend our favorite days. Winston was sent to South Africa when matters there began to tension. He was taken prisoner and sent to a POW prison in Pretoria by another rebel group. He wrote while in jail,” I am 25 today-it is terrible to think how little time remains.” Winston escaped and found out people had already considered him a hero. Later he was sent off to WWI, which was called the Great War during his time. He served as a grenadier commander and he began to try and become a higher-ranking officer. Towards the end of the war he only was able to command a battalion and Winston was disappointed because he wanted to command a brigade. When he returned to Britain he became involved in politics and became an advisor for the British military as the Great War began to come to an end. Before the 2nd World War he tried to warn people about the rapidly growing Nazi power in Germany. After Germany invaded Poland Churchill was elected as Prime Minister. Churchill stayed in office for quite some time. When he lost in election and was forced to resign he quoted,” I leave when the Pub closes.”

Some of the accomplishments that he made have a big effect on us today. Being a prime minister during WWII is a big thing but he kept the morale of the British people high during then. People in Britain could’ve been often discouraged by all of the bombings in London. Perseverance in his days on the battlefield lead him on the way to becoming a commander. One of his biggest successes for Winston was getting very involved in politics being a military advisor and a statesman. A success that isn’t noticed much about him was he being selected into the Hussar division (The Royal Cavalry of Britain. Churchill had done many things but he didn’t stop his life once he found out people thought he was a hero when he was arrested in South Africa.

Winston Churchill is my hero because he matched many of my qualifications for a hero. He was very determined in his years as a soldier even though he almost lost hope when he was taken captive in Pretoria. Winston was also a very courageous person when he went to WWI and was stationed on the frontlines in France. After he got back from WWI he didn’t stop his life there because he began to get into politics. Another courageous act he had done was when he tried to alert people about the Nazis getting too much strength when Germany was forbidden to have such a big army. I also liked some of his famous quotes and jokes that also I admire. One funny quote Winston said when he visited Virginia and went out eat chicken was,” Sir, would you like the breast or the thigh?” “Are you talking about you or the chicken?” Another funny thing Winston said when he was talking a woman named Nancy,” Winston, if you were my husband I’d put poison in your coffee!” “If I were your husband Nancy I would drink it.”

Like I mentioned earlier he didn’t stop his life after leaving Africa. This is a very big quality for a person to be determined even after he faced his toughest endurance in his life being in Pretoria held captive. I admire that he continued risking his life in WWI as a grenadier (a grenade thrower). Winston never wanted to stop doing different jobs even after his years in service of the British army. Politics was pretty hard and still is for a person to start doing. For Winston he went from statesman to Prime Minister which really impresses me. Even more impressive is the fact that he stayed in office for at least 20 years after WWII. Someone as determined as him would be remembered as a great person in history.
