I chose Steve Yzerman. Steve was born in Cranbrook British Columbia, on May 9th 1965. Yzerman grew up in his home town, Cranbrook, but when he was 9 he moved to Nepean, Ontario. He watched many Stanley Cups since he was five years old. His dream was to one day make the NHL and play in the Stanley Cup. Steve married his wife Lisa and they have three daughters, Sophia, Isabella and Maria. His nicknames were Stevie Wonder, The Captain, and Stevie Y.

Yzerman was drafted by Detroit Red Wings in 1983 a fourth overall draft pick in round one. At the age of 21 he became team captain. He served as captain for 20 years and holds the record for longest serving captain in N.H.L history. Steve has won numerous awards such as the Lester B. Pearson award in 1989, the Conn Smythe trophy as the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 1998, the Selke trophy as the best defensive forward in 2000, and the Bill Masterton Memorial trophy for perseverance in 2003. He is a nine-time N.H.L All-Star, a first Team All-star in 2000, and a member of the All-Rookie team in 1984. He has played in 1400 N.H.L games. He has won 3 Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, and an Olympic gold medal with team Canada. Steve is remarkable because he was the youngest captain in N.H.L history and he is a great leader. Steve faced numerous knee injuries but his determination and love of the game kept him motivated to continue playing. I learned from Steve; have good sportsmanship, be a good leader, and never give up.

In order to be a hero you have to have a positive attitude, good sportsmanship, courage, determination, and leadership. Steve Yzerman had all of the qualities of a great hero. He inspired many people and continues to be a great role model for many young hockey players and is a hockey legend. He is considered a hero outside of hockey as well. On January 2, he was presented the key to the city of Detroit for his contributions to the city. Not far from where Steve grew up in Nepean a rink has been named the Steve Yzerman Arena in his honour.
