Neil Armstrong

by Scott from Lexington

My hero is Neil Armstrong. He was a United States astronaut and is known for being the first person to set foot on the moon. He was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, USA. After graduating from Purdue University, he became a Navy fighter pilot in Korea from 1949 to 1951. Before becoming an astronaut in 1962, he was a civilian test pilot.

Neil Armstrong along with Edwin Aldrin Jr., landed the Apollo 11 lunar module on the moon and were the first to explore the lunar surface. This is known as possibly one of the greatest scientific achievements of mankind. Also the astronauts collected several ponds of moon rock and advanced human knowledge of the moon. In addition, this landing improved satellite and space travel technology.

Armstrong was born in 1930 and is still alive today. When he was 16 years old, he began flying as a student pilot. He earned a navy scholarship and began attending Purde University in 1947.In 1950, Armstrong began active duty with the navy for the Korean War. Before piloting the Apollo 11, Armstrong was the pilot of the Gemini 8 mission which was launched in March 1966. After he retired as an astronaut, he began teaching at the University of Cincinnati as a professor of aerospace engineering from 1971-79.

After being world renound as the first person to set foot on the moon, Neil Armstrong leads a quiet, almost anonymous life. He currently lives in Indian Hill, a small town in southwest Ohio. He avoids the press and tries to lead a quiet life with little success.

I think Neil Armstrong is a hero because he risked him life to advance science. His bravery to go where no man has gone before also has given him the title of a hero. Also he is very modest; trying to lead a quiet life after being so famous.
