Allison Holker

by Brianne from Campbell River, BC

Allison Holker is an extremely talented dancer, born in Minnesota, USA, on February 6, 1988. She grew up in Orem, Utah and has been interested in dancing since a very young age.

When she was only three, Allison began to dance. From then on, she never really wanted to stop. She started dancing with a studio called the Dance Club in her hometown of Orem when she was four years old. That is where she learned to become a magnificent contemporary jazz and modern lyrical specialist. By the age of fourteen Allison was offered with the opportunity to begin teaching dance classes at the Dance Club. Not many people have the chance to teach dance at such a young age, so she decided to do it right away. A few years later, Allison attended a Broadway camp called kampNYC. She then appeared as a cheerleader for the East High Wildcats in the hit Disney Movie, “High School Musical”, in 2006. Her dancing in the film was absolutely wonderful.

In October of 2005, Allison went to an audition in Los Angeles for the reality dance show, ”So You Think You Can Dance”. It’s a show where people compete by dancing on stage to be voted America’s favourite dancer. Allison’s dance for the audition included some amazing flips, and the judges sent her straight through to Las Vegas for the next round of auditions. In Vegas, Allison worked with some amazing choreographers and the judges continued to see her ability to dance, therefore sending her to Hollywood in June 2006 to be in the top 20 dancers of the competition. Allison did some spectacular performances and made it all the way to the top eight. Throughout her experience on the show, Allison performed various types of dances with her partner, Ivan Koumaev, including Club Salsa, Hip Hop, Argentine Tango, West Coast Swing and Contemporary. Even though she was not voted America’s favourite dancer, Allison brought such great entertainment to so many people. Mary Murphy (a judge on the show) even once began to cry because she thought that Allison’s performance was so wonderful. Mary also once stated that she thought Allison had a high chance at winning the entire competition, and when she was eliminated on July 27, 2006, Mary said it was the most shocking elimination ever. Another judge on the show, Dan Karaty, said that he believed Allison was the most versatile dancer on the second season of, ”So You Think You Can Dance.” Shortly after leaving the show, Allison was able to go on tour with the top ten dancers from the competition. The tour began on September twelfth 2006 and went until October 29 2006 all over the US. Allison then moved to New York City where she currently teaches dance at the New York City Dance Alliance.

Allison Holker is my hero because of what a great dancer she is. I also dance, and have been since I was three years old and Allison has been so inspirational to me. The first time that I saw her dance was at her audition for, ”So You Think You Can Dance.” I was so impressed with her dancing. She doesn’t only have amazing technique, but she also adds a lot of emotion to her performances. During the many times that I saw her dance throughout the show, I could tell that Allison was doing what she loves. I think that dancing is a wonderful way to express your feelings, and I hope to be able to show that like Allison. I also really like her versatility. She could do any type of dance, and make it look like she’d been doing it forever. I wish that I could dance just like Allison, and watching her has really helped me to realize that it’s possible. I’m sure that she has also inspired many others to dance.
