"Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it's at the end of your arm, as you get older, remember you have another hand: The first one is to help yourself, the second one is to help others." That was a phrase that my hero, Audrey Hepburn, said. Audrey Hepburn is my hero because she always helped people, she never gave up, and she always had hope, regardless of the severity of the situation. Audrey Hepburn has taught me to never give up, believe in miracles, and to help others.
My hero is Audrey Hepburn. She was born on May 4, 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. When she was a child, World War II was going on. Hepburn and her family had to go the Netherlands. She suffered from anemia, malnutrition, a weak respiratory, and edema. Audrey Hepburn danced ballet to help gain money towards a resistance cause. Once the war ended, Hepburn moved to Amsterdam with her mother. She still pursued ballet and dance for three more years. She was then spotted by Paramount Pictures, and she began playing minor roles in films. That was the start of Audrey Hepburn's acting career.
Audrey Hepburn's first major was in a movie called "The Secret People". In the movie "Roman Holiday" she played Princess Ann. Audrey Hepburn got nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Now, she was well known and starring in the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" made her even more of a star. One reason Audrey Hepburn is my hero is because she always gave; she didn't forget what she went through as a child, and she wanted to make sure kids around the world wouldn't have to experience starvation. Audrey Hepburn became the UNICEF ambassador, and after she was appointed ambassador she went to Ethiopia, Canada, Europe, Turkey, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala, Thailand, and El Salvador. She received the United States' Highest Civilian Award in 1992. Soon after that, Audrey Hepburn was diagnosed with appendiceal cancer. Audrey Hepburn, being the kind, loving person I look up to, continued helping kids. With cancer, she still went to Somalia, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and France. Audrey then died the next year.
Audrey Hepburn has inspired me to be nice to everybody and help when possible. I'm not as selfish as I used to be because Audrey Hepburn has taught me to be thankful for everything that I have. There are kids out there who are dying of starvation and here I am throwing a fit about not liking what I'm having for dinner. Audrey Hepburn has taught me to help people. Now, I'm helping people in minor ways. If somebody needs a pencil I will offer them mine, if an elder is having a hard time carrying something I will offer to carry it for them, and when I help the person and they say,"Thank you, you helped a lot," I feel like I have made a difference in their lives and it makes me feel like a good person! My definition of a hero is someone who has made me a better person. Audrey Hepburn has done that; I have a new perspective on life and now I'm more grateful.
Hopefully, by now, my essay has proved why Audrey Hepburn is my hero. Not only is she a successful actress, but she is also very affectionate and giving. Ambassador of UNICEF and award-winning actress, Audrey Hepburn has taught me many things. Audrey Hepburn has changed me for the better, and for that I am thankful. Thank you, Audrey Hepburn, my hero.
