Abraham Lincoln

by Huth from San Diego

As wars waged throughout time, great men stood to defend their nation as well as help it recover. Many people were forced to be slaves and work for their warring nations. The battles were hard on these men that cared for their nation, but one man had to endure the worst war in American history. Abraham Lincoln watched as a civil war unfolded right in the middle of the United States. The north and south started a brutal battle that lasted years. Abraham Lincoln had the duty of filling the cracks of the broken nation. Lincoln also had to win the battle to free the slaves in the U.S. During the time of this desperate civil war, a man named Abraham Lincoln fought to free the slaves and reunite the torn nation.

Abraham Lincoln had to figure out a way to free the slaves without pushing the Border States into the confederacy. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which was intended to prevent Britain from recognizing the Confederacy and free the slaves. The confederate states had many of the slaves within their areas though the North had slaves as well. The Union needed to take control of the southern states to free the slaves. As the North began taking control of more confederate states millions of slaves were being freed. After Abraham Lincoln died the North wanted revenge and turned the Emancipation Proclamation into a real law. Though Lincoln tried to free the slaves by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, it wasn’t sufficient because it was not fully seen through. The North realized this and actually started the emancipation. This lead to the 13th Amendment and freed the slaves. Abraham Lincoln started with the Emancipation Proclamation, and it ended with the 13th Amendment. He started it all so initially he freed the slaves.

Abraham Lincoln had the duty of reuniting the nation while the war was raging throughout the U.S. The confederate states had slaves and the North wanted to free them by taking their states back. Lincoln was helping the Union free the slaves. He had a plan by starting the Emancipation Proclamation. This would help by getting slaves free when the states they were living in were taken. The South was fighting for its freedom and seceded from the North. The 11 slave states became the confederate states. Abraham Lincoln tried to devise a plan to reconstruct the nation without risking more lives. Lincoln set up reconstructed governments in several southern states during the war. He tried giving land to ex slaves and others who had lost their land to the battles. This would help them start a life during the Reconstruction period. Unfortunately John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln. Andrew Johnson continued Lincoln's plan and the nation was eventually reconstructed. Abraham Lincoln tried reconstructing the nation by recreating governments and supplying people with land. Even though he was killed during the middle of the Reconstruction, he still passed his goals on and they were seen through.

Abraham Lincoln had the duties of freeing the slaves of the South and reconstructing the nation. The slaves of America were free because Lincoln started the Emancipation Proclamation. The United States was reunited because he made it his goal to reconstruct them. Abraham Lincoln inspires me because he cared for his country, his people, and stood to defend it. He fought for the slaves that were held within the South when no one would. He tried to bring the nation that was destroying each other back together. Though Abraham Lincoln passed away, people still followed what he was trying to do and fought for freedom. Lincoln was a truly noble man that believed the country could reunite. He showed everyone that to have freedom you had to fight for it.
