Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 2, 1809, in a log cabin on Nolin Creek, near Hodgenville, Kentucky. He had a father named Thomas, a mother named Nancy, a brother named Thomas, and a sister named Sarah. Even though Lincoln became the 16th president of the United States in the future, he was a farmer and a carpenter during his earlier life. Three years after he was born, his family moved to a farm on Knob Creek, which was not far from the city of Hodgenville. At home, he studied Bible scriptures with his family. Later on, he started his own family with his wife, Mary Todd, and had three children.

Lincoln accomplished many things in his life. Some achievements changed history forever. Most of Lincoln’s accomplishments are famously known by people today. These include: abolishing slavery and freeing slaves, saving the Union, and helping to win the battle of Gettysburg. Also, in the Gettysburg address, he redefined the Civil War as a rededication to the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence.

Abraham Lincoln fought for the freedom of slaves. As a President, Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, which ordered that all slaves in rebelling territories must be freed. It is known as one of the most important documents in the United States, because about 4 million African people gained freedom from this act. Abolitionists wanted Lincoln to free all slaves for a long time as well. When the 13th Amendment in the U.S. Constitution was passed, all slavery was finally completely abolished in 1865.

Lincoln was known as “Honest Abe.” The way that he was respected was simply because of his honesty. One day, while he was managing the country store, he found out that he had received a few cents from a costumer more than was due, and another day, he realized that he had given a woman too little tea for her money. Quickly, he brought the woman the right amount of tea that she had paid for, not to surprise her, but only to be honest with his job. All his honest deeds demonstrate that Abraham Lincoln is my hero, because I believe that I should be honest all the time, just like him. Honesty can earn you a good reputation of trustworthiness from the people around you.
