Abraham Lincoln

by Sam from Huntington

Abraham Lincoln was born Sunday, February 12, 1809 in a log cabin near Hodgenville, KY. He stood 6ft 4in and weighed 180lbs. He was the son of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He was also a carpenter and a farmer.

As he was growing up he was always reading. He worked a lot of jobs including postmaster. He impressed people with his character, fought the town bully and got the nickname Honest Abe Lincoln. He ran for Illinois legislator 4 times and won all of them. He became president in Nov 6,1860.

After the election, most of the states seceded from the Union because they were afraid of Republican rule. After the fall of Ft. Sumter, Lincoln made an army and went to fight to save the Union from being destroyed. After four years of Civil Car the Emancipation Proclamation was proclaimed. It freed all slaves in Confederate areas not controlled by the Union.

On Friday April 14, Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth. He was carried to a hospital where he died early the next morning. He was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery on May 4th 1865.

I feel Abraham Lincoln is a hero because he worked to help others and abolished slavery in the United States. He is also a hero because he was one of our best presidents and he was always a good person.
