Aden Abdullah Osman Darr

by Halima from Portland

Aden Abdullah Osman was born at Belet Weyen, went to school and worked for the government offices. He was the first president of Somalia. He had his own business, Somali Youth Club, and was secretary of the Belet Weyen section of the party in Mogadishu.

He wanted success but he got there slowly. In the 1960 elections they voted him as president of Somalia. People liked him as president. That's why they elected him as second president of Somalia.

In 1967 Shermarke beat him as president, but Shermarke was killed two years later. After he died Muhammad Said Barre took over the country.

In 1990, as the country became out of control, Osman was among about 100 politicians who signed a paper expressing worry over the destruction, killings and flight of refugees as a result of the civil war.

When Osman died, they named Mogodishu International Airport after him.
