Andri Popa

by Teodora from Cluj-Napoca

I think that Andri Popa is a real hero of our country. He was an outlaw, and like Robin Hood, he robbed the rich to give to the poor. Among his deeds, he rescued a group of Romanian women who were stolen and made slaves to the Turks. He also founded a village named Palilula near Craiova, a town in the south-west of Romania. He built a church in that village in 1827. The village is said to be protected by God, because the Turks and then the Germans tried in vain to find it.

Because of his great deeds, the people created a song for him. Look at some lines of this song:

″Who passes in Valea Seaca
With the dagger without sheath
And the breast uncovered
Andri Popa the famous!

He’s an outlaw
And he’s famous
Andri Popa the brave!″

”Andri Popa” – the song, is a landmark in the Romanian rock music. The song reached national recognition with PHOENIX, a legendary rock group, who found their inspiration in Romanian folk music.
