Arnold Walczak

by Lise from Gondecourt

I'm writing to you about my hero, who is an exemplary and admirable man. Indeed, he's my great-grandfather who was Arnold Walczak. He was born on July 6th, 1915 in Roubaix. And he died on August 25th, 1990, because of bowel cancer.

In his life, he was a soldier for twenty years. When he was 26 years old, in September 1939, he was sent to do the war because the Germans invaded Poland. It was the beginning of World War II. During months, he fought the Germans ; he got injured several times and nearly died. But one day, he put his life in danger for somebody else. Indeed, during a battle, his companion, Oscar, was hit by a bullet in the shoulder. He went hurriedly to him, laid him on the ground despite the shots, away from the firing guns. My great-grandfather removed his jacket, tore a piece fit and wrapped it around Oscar's shoulder to stop the blood flowing. So, he saved the life of his companion, Oscar, who was very thankful.

This act was brave and heroic. He was very lively, great, fearless and selfless! Therefore, he was very courageous. And It was very difficult, he survived and he saved the life of somebody. He's really a hero for me. He's my model. Thanks to him, I see things differently. I want to help, save people in need. Every person on this earth should want to do the same thing and risk their life to save that of others and they must be less selfish when a serious and bad event takes place. I would like to have his courage. Thank you for your attention.
