The sport this man played is now often judged before it is played, yet those that have played have a fiery passion for it. Through that passion he used his persistence and courage to become a champion. In 1956 Alexander Medved was drafted by the army where he voluntarily participated in sporting events. “Gradually the sport of courage and strength, sports brave and resilient – struggle more and more often leads him on a wrestling mat” (Bear AleksandrVasilevich). Later he met Pavel Grigoryev who became his coach. Through his persistence to grow in wrestling and his courage to step upon that mat, he won 3 Olympic golds, 7 world championships, and 3 championships of Europe. His courage and persistence have led to his great success. Through all of Alexander’s success he would never give up on what he wanted so he persisted to win and was courageous enough to step upon that mat. That is why he is a hero.

From a young boy Alexander had the untamed persistence of a wrestler. Alexander as a boy “Grew the high, clumsy guy, and hardly could somebody have thought then, that inexhaustible energy and force laid in him energy and force which would make him the strongest fighter in the world” (Medved of Minsk). Despite what people thought about him he persisted in becoming a wrestler. His persistence in becoming the best wrestler allowed him to break through what others saw in him and he became the best. He showed me that all I need to do is be more persistent in getting better and I can become all I ever want to become. During his career he also persisted in being a super heavy weight just so he could fight harder people (Alexander Medved). This always makes him one of the lowest weights in his weight class. He is an inspiration to me by being able to push the boundaries of what he knew he could do and that which he didn’t know he could do. Making him a stronger individual to me through what he was able to do and what he pushed himself to become. Through all of his persistence he has become one of the greatest wrestlers ever.

Medved’s persistence led him to be full of courage. Alexander Medved has won three gold medals at the Olympic Games (Medved of Minsk). Just imagine yourself standing in front of the class and giving a speech. Alexander did more than that; he stood on television for the whole world to see him wrestle. You will know that you are being watched by millions if people who are watching your every move, waiting for you to make a mistake that takes so courage. Also at each Olympic Games and other competitions he “rarely weighed more than 105kg and sometimes fought competitors more than 60kg heavier than him” (Alexander Medved (URS)). Also he was courageous enough to wrestle in the super heavyweight class, which meant he had to wrestle people that were so much bigger than him it wasn’t even funny. He shouldn’t have won those matches, yet his persistence to train harder so he had better technique and his courage to step up to the challenge ahead of him on that mat let him prevail. In the 1972 Olympics Alexander found himself against Kris Taylor who looked like a mountain compared to him. During that match his back crackles and it hurt but he worked through the pain and was able to win, but he had more matches to win his gold so he found the Germans and some of their new medicine that helped him forget about some of the pain, allowing him to win his 3rd gold medal (Medved of Minsk). Despite all of that medicine he was still courageous to step upon that mat and try, knowing he might injure himself more. He is a courageous man who couldn’t have gotten to where he was without a persistence to succeed and courage to match.

Medved had a passion for the sport and through his persistence and courage he was able to better his sport. He was able to overcome great challenges such as Kris Taylor and did great things while he wrestled. He showed you can walk onto that mat and be unafraid even if you are afraid. He inspires me to become what I want to become and that nothing is beyond my grasp if I put my head to it and have the persistence and courage to continue on my path.
