Madeleine Albright

by Jennifer from Cedar Grove

“A hero is a man who does what he can,” implied Romain Rolland. Heroes help people who are in need of help. Heroes possess qualities, such as selflessness, loyalty, open-heartedness, and honesty. A person doesn’t need to be a famous to be a hero. They can be every day people. Madeline Albright is a hero to many people in the United States and the Czech Republic for her political contributions.

Madeleine Albright was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on May 15, 1937. Her name was “Madlenka” a nickname given by her grandmother. As she got older, she moved to the U.S to flee communism. She received a scholarship to Wellesley College, and eventually a Doctorate from Columbia University. She joined the Carter Administration responsible for foreign policy legislation, and was ambassador to the United Nations.

Madeleine Albright was nominated the 64th Secretary of State in 1996 by Bill Clinton. She was the first female Secretary in the United States, and the highest ranking woman in U.S history. Albright influenced American policy in Bosnia and the Middle East. She worked for democracy and human rights, encouraged American trade business, and raised environmental standards. She was criticized for defending sanctions against Iraq under Saddam Hussein.

Boutros Ghali said of Albright, “She’s no shrinking violet. She can be biting.” She was not afraid to fight for what she believed in. She possesses loyalty, open-heartedness, and honesty. You can trust her and she finishes what she starts. Finally, Albright is open-hearted and honest because she speaks out to make a change and inspires others around the world.

In conclusion, heroes do what they can for other people. People can be a hero in many ways. Madeleine Albright is a hero to many people for her accomplishments in her political life, and because she was the first female United States Secretary of State. Madeleine Albright inspires me and other people in the world.
