Franziska van Almsick

by Sara from Slovenia

What is so special about my hero? Why is this swimmer arousing so much admiration and enthusiasm, and on the other hand so much envy? With her life-style and hard work she inspired me and became my idol.

Franziska was born in Germany, year 1978 and at the age of 5 she already started swimming. Her outstanding talent was soon discovered so she was sent to a training centre and attended a youth sports college. Besides, she preformed very-well in school and achieved excellent grades. Whenever she aimed at a goal, she pursued it with devotion, even as a child. Consequently, life became hard for the young school girl. She would be the first to leave home in the morning and the last to come back at night, with many hours of training and school between.

Her talent, ambition, consistent hard work and the support she received soon paid off. At the age of 14, she attended the Barcelona 92’ Olympic Games, and won two bronze and silver medals. Two years later, she became a world champion by braking the world record on 200 freestyle. Franziska had experienced ups and downs in her career, but always remained cheerful and a positive sports personality.

For me she is a perfect example of a successful sportswoman and she will always be an inspiration for my own swimming career.
