Benjamin Burnley was born March 10, 1978. He is a successful musician, as the lead singer and guitarist in his band Breaking Benjamin. He grew up in both Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. When he turned 18, he dropped out of high school moving to Wilkesbarre, Pensylvania, and roomed with Jonathan Price the current bass player for Breaking Benjamin. Listening to Nirvana's "Nevermind" he taught himself how to play guitar. He played cover songs in multiple coffee houses as a single artist for money. He did this until he joined his first band in California called "Strangers With Candy". Later he moved back to Pennsylvania, and started a band called "Plan 9". Later during one show it was announced that from then on the band would go by the name of "Breaking Benjamin". This is supposidly linked back to the story of how Benjamin knocked over Kurt Cobain's (lead singer of Nirvana and Ben's idol) microphone and Kurt Cobain said "I'd like to thank Benjamin for breaking my &*#$ microphone".

Benjamin Burnley suffers from numerous phobias. He has a fear of flying, getting sick, driving, the dark, and multiple others. He claims in interviews that he does not believe in a person's time to die and wants to prevent dying as long as possible.

"It's a phobia.  It's just something that I feel I don't have to do, but I'm sure it would make things a hell of a lot easier for me and certainly the band as well.  It's just not worth the trauma that it causes me." Benjamin Burnley

These phobias led him to take up drinking and he quickly became an alcoholic. He has recently overcome his alcohol addiction, and claims he regrets ever drinking a drop. He also has gotten past his phobias by traveling with his girlfriend, and always taking a boat as far as possible to avoid cars.

Benjamin Burnley is truly a hero of faith. Not only did he teach himself to play guitar, following his dream, he also has channeled his phobias into his music. This is seen in his album called "phobia". On the cover there is a picture of an angel hovering just above the ground symbolizing Benjamin's fear of flying. Instead of a shadow, below him on the ground, is the Breaking Benjamin's logo a Celtic knot. He also overcame being an alcoholic and admitted to it publicly through his music. His music is truly inspiring and holds much emotion. Clearly he is a hero of faith.

His music:

Songs about his phobias:

"Breakdown"

"Until the End"

"Evil Angel"

Songs about his drinking problem:

"I Will Not Bow"

"Anthem of the Angels"

"Hopeless"

These are not all of the songs he has written on these topics, simply good examples. If you listen to his music it is the best way to understand him as a person and a hero.
