Benjamin Franklin once said, "Lost time is never found again." Franklin is best known as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. He was key in the development of several important historical documents, including the Declaration of Independence. Franklin made several contributions to not only his era, but modern time, as well. Without Benjamin Franklin, we might not have glasses, stoves or the knowledge that electricity and lighting are the same (Stoneback 2013). Benjamin Franklin is an American hero because of his contributions to society through his inventions and efforts to secure America's freedom. Benjamin Franklin's character was influenced by his love of reading and writing, although he had little formal education. He made and grew his wealth through a successful printing business. His love of writing led to an interest in public affairs. Franklin felt it was his duty to better America in any way he could. It so happened that Franklin's determination to better America led to unimaginable inventions, theories and discoveries. Franklin became a heroic figure through the commitment he had to his work as a researcher, creator, writer, politician, mediator and founder. Benjamin Franklin is a world-renowned hero because he consistently demonstrated the character traits of dedication and fortitude. During the time when Benjamin Franklin became a hero to many, the American Revolution was occurring. In such a dangerous time, Franklin traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to be an ambassador for America, even though his health was diminishing (Fritz 42). Benjamin Franklin's dedication is displayed through his willingness to do anything to help America become its own country. It is thought by many that Franklin also demonstrated the trait of determination because a lot of his inventions, such as a rocking chair with a fan over it and the iron stove, were not even being thought of during his lifetime (Fritz 28). Because no one was creating anything like Franklin, he was faced with a lot of skeptics and critics. Instead of giving up his inventions, Franklin was determined to succeed and continued creating things that would be very beneficial to modern society. Benjamin was one of the most advanced scientist of his era. Glasses, as we know them today, are very close to the concept Benjamin created in his time. He also made a rudimentary version of flippers, found a way to make streetlights glow brighter and introduced the concept of daylight saving time (Stoneback 2013). He contributed to the establishment of several community organizations in Philadelphia, including a lending library (Stoneback 2013). Without Benjamin Franklin, things that are taken for granted in industrialized countries, such the United States of America, probably wouldn't exist or be the same as we know them today.
