Bethany Hamilton

Bethany Hamilton is an awesome and inspiring girl who got attacked by a shark and survived. She is an inspiring hero because despite losing her left arm she restarted her training all over again, learnt to balance on her board and became a professional surfer. She lost her arm at the age of 13.Three weeks after her attack she went back out on her board again, she tried to get up and surf with two waves but she couldn't. On the third wave she got up and surfed right onto the beach. On October 31 2003 she, her friend, her friend Alana's dad and brother went out to Tunnels Beach to go for a surf. While she was out there lying on her board she felt a lot of pressure on her left arm. Her arm was being pulled backwards and forwards. She felt no pain at all, then she noticed that the water around her was turning red. When her friends came over they realised that her arm had been bitten of! They pushed her into shore on her surf board, they had to rush her to the hospitable. Meanwhile, Alana's dad had saved her life because he had cut off the blood circulation by putting his shirt around her arm.

Bethany Hamilton has so many admirable personal qualities that I could choose from, but the three main qualities she has are perseverance, bravery and, last but not least, determination. The first quality, of perseverance, means that whatever difficulties she is going through she perseveres and just keeps going. She is my hero because the shark attack didn't stop her from fulfilling her dreams.

The next quality is that she is very brave. She was brave at the hospital (even braver than her mother). She was also very brave in the water when the shark bit her arm off, and she didn't feel anything except some pressure. Even when she was out of the water, she didn't feel a thing. So that is why I chose her as brave.

The last quality is that she has is determination. I chose determination for her because she had to be able to get back up on her board, straight after her shark attack. If I was her I would not have gone back to surf three weeks later, or even get into the water. But Bethany, through her determination, she surfed.

I think Bethany Hamilton is a hero in two ways, one that she is famous but the other one is that she is a hero to lots of people, as she has helped to make their lives happier. Bethany Hamilton is an inspiration to me and an awesome surfer, who helps people who have lost limbs, teaches them to surf or just how to ride the waves. I admire Bethany as a strong believer that anything is possible if you put your heart and soul into it. This is why I chose Bethany Hamilton as my hero.
