When my hero, Ben Herosian, was born, he had to hold on tight for his life. He spent days and even weeks in the hospital. Ben was a baby who had a physical disability called Moebius Syndrome. Some of the effects are that the eye lids do not close; he has a lack of facial expression, which means he cannot smile or frown. He has deformity of his tongue, jaw, and limbs. He has no legs and has only one arm. Although he has prosthetic legs and a prosthetic arm, there is an up side - his prosthetics are bulletproof.

As if Ben had not been through enough, a tragic auto accident happened before Ben was even two. The accident took Ben’s birthmother’s life. Even though his mother was taken, his father, Brian Herosian, was able to play professional football for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after recovering from the accident.

Later on, better things began to happen. Ben's father, Brian, met a beautiful young lady, Deidre, who instantly fell in love with Brian and Ben. She became Ben’s new mother, and soon came two siblings for Ben!

When Ben was 12 years old, he and his family were swimming in the ocean. Suddenly a wave picked up and roared over Ben causing him to lose a prosthetic leg. Luckily, it was washed to shore and a man who saw it picked it up and started yelling, “Did anyone lose a leg?”

Brian and Deidre decided to take the family to Disney World. Disney World treats special needs children especially nice, so Brian was trying to get Ben to get into a wheelchair so he could go to the front of the line. Ben got so tired that he gave in to Brian’s offer to get into the wheelchair and got to the front of the line. As Ben was about to go into the park, he stood up and quickly responded, “It’s a miracle!”

Ben went to college 3000 miles away from home. He went to Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. When he finished college, he could not find a job that suited him. He started writing a book series called, Jungleville Tails of Bennett Bengal. The first book is called Beginnings, which is about a tiger couple who is going to get their first child. They find out that he has no feet! Read the book to find out how his parents react! The second book, New Equipment, is about when Bennett goes to the park and decides he wants to get feet to play with the older kids, so he gets his prosthetic feet. The third book, which is not published yet, is called, Bennett Goes to School. The series is supposed to be about 10-12 books long.

Some of the money that Ben makes from his books goes to the Rehabilitation Centre for Children Foundation. Not only does he donate tons of money to people and kids with needs like his, but he inspires many people. He has disabilities, but that doesn’t stop him. He has already published two books! He makes people believe in themselves, and the money he earns for a living he donates to the people who need it!

As of right now, Ben is 26 years old and is married to his lovely wife, Colleen, who is a grade school teacher. They live and work in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Fun Fact:
Ben’s last name even has Hero in it -- Herosian!

Did you know...
Heather Stewart, the partner of Lily Field and Company, which published Ben’s books, actually believed in Ben more than his mom, because her son also was born with missing limbs?
