Barack Obama

by Shaya from Barrie

Yes we can!

My name is Barack Hussein Obama. You probably know me as the famous first African American president. I am internationally known because of this. Just recently I won the Nobel Peace prize. You probably think I was born to a rich family but really I was born to an average family. I had no idea as a child I would grow up to be president of America.

I was born on August 4th 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii, to my mother Ann Durham & my father Barack Sr. By the time I was 2 my parents broke up.

My mother eventually remarried to my stepfather Lolo Soetoro. I then had 1 step sister, Maya Soetoro, and 3 stepbrothers Konrad Ng, Mark Ndesanjo and David Ndesanjo. I only had 1 biological brother George Hussein Oyango Obama. In 1967 my family was forced to move to Indonesia when the leader made a law saying that all studying abroad there had to come to their homeland. I attended public schools in Jakarta. As a teenager I did drugs. I know that what I did was wrong but at the time I had questions of who I was and the drugs helped me overcome this question. Overtime I realized what I was doing and stopped. This was my biggest mistake ever but I could not let it interfere with my life anymore. I eventually returned to Hawaii where I was raised by my grandparents.

I have been educated in a number of schools all over from Indonesia to Hawaii. As a child I was educated in public schools in Jakarta such as Besuki public school. From grade 5 to my graduation I went to Punahu school a private college in Hawaii. I then studied to be a lawyer at Harvard Law School and I eventually became a lawyer fighting for justice. My clients probably had no idea I would one day be president.

It was when I was a lawyer I met Michelle. She was my mentor and I impressed her with my work. My first date with her was to see the movie ''Do the Right Thing'' We were married October of 1992. Our first daughter Malia was born in 1998 and our second daughter Natasha was born in 2001. Before I became president we lived mainly in Chicago but being a lawyer made us move all over the place. It was difficult but we were all able to get through it.

In the year 2004 I decided to run for senator of Illinois. I began to campaign. I held speeches in front of large crowds and made T.V and radio adds. All of that hard work payed off. When the senate election came I won and became senator of Illinois. I would be senator for the next 4 years.

In the year 2008 George Bush`s term as president would end and a federal election would be held. I was the leader of the Democratic party. If we won I would become president. All I had to do was win against the Republican party leader John McCain and his partner Sarah Palin. In 2009 when the federal election was held I won and was inaugurated on January 20th 2009.

Being president of America is certainly my biggest accomplishment. I now live in the White House with my family. It is never easy. There is always an issue and I'm not everybody's favourite.

Some good deeds I have done as president include my many trips to countries with conflict. I have negotiated with many leaders to help them try and make their countries more peaceful. I am also helping America get through the recession on February 17, 2009. I signed the American Recovery and Reinvestments Act of 2009, a stimulus package that would help America get through the recession.

In October of 2009 I won the Nobel Peace Prize. I won it so early in my presidential term that I was pretty humble about getting the award. I believe it is a great accomplishment but I think I need more time to prove myself worthy of the award. There are a mix of people that say I should get it and some people that say I don't deserve it yet.

Looking back I am very happy with most of the events that have happened in my life. I have gone from an average boy to being president of one of the world's most powerful countries. I really wish my parents were here to see me become president. Other than the incident with drugs I have hardly any regrets of what has happened to me in the past. For the years to come I will try to make America and the world a better place.
