I believe that a hero is someone who can overcome obstacles to achieve a certain goal, while also serving as a role model and being an inspiration to others. My hero, Brian Roberts, has done exactly that. Brian Roberts is the starting second baseman for the Baltimore Orioles. I look up to Roberts because he is a huge inspiration to me, he is a very charitable person, and he has overcome multiple injuries. Whether it is on or off the field, Brian Roberts is someone who I will always look up to.
A big part to why Brian Roberts is my hero is because he is a huge inspiration to me. I have loved the Baltimore Orioles ever since I got into baseball. Over the years, players have come and gone, bouncing from team to team, but Roberts has been an Oriole during his entire MLB career. I have a lot of respect for his loyalty to the team and his fans. Another reason why he is a huge inspiration to me is because he plays the same position as me. We both play second base, and every time I go to an Orioles game, I play close attention to Roberts when he is on the field. I learn from his style of play and utilize what I learned when I myself am on the field.
Another main reason Brian Roberts is a hero of mine is because he is very charitable. Roberts founded the One-For-All-Fund which is dedicated to improving the health and well being of children through patient care, research, and education. The fund also supports The University of Maryland Children's Hospital who help treat critically ill children. Roberts loves the city of Baltimore and its people and is very active in the community. He funds and attends various events around Baltimore making the city a better place. Some professional athletes can be real jerks to their fans, and reject any autograph offer. With Roberts, no fan of his will be disappointed when asking for an autograph, as he will gladly say yes and go through with it.
The final reason why Brian Roberts is my hero is that he has an unbelievable amount of determination and dedication. In 2010, Roberts was diagnosed with a serious concussion that sidelined him for the 2010 season. Many, including me, thought this would be the end of his baseball career, considering he has been in the MLB for a long time. But in the 2011 season, he made his return and looked just as good playing the game as he did before his concussion. A year after his return, Roberts injured his knee sliding into second base during a spring training game. After being carried of the field by his teammates, I thought for sure that was the last time I'd see Roberts on the baseball field. After many sessions of physical therapy and gruesome training, Roberts made his way back to the starting lineup finally healthy. The determination he has shown proves that he is dedicated to the sport and his fans. Being able to overcome two serious injuries and then return to playing just as well is an amazing feat that some cannot overcome.
The traits that Bryan Roberts possesses are traits of a hero. Being a big inspiration to me while being charitable and determined are the main reasons why he is my hero. I believe if there were more people like Bryan Roberts, the world will be a better place.
