Betty Seib

by Jordyn from Swift Current

Does a hero have to necessarily be someone distinguished by courage and strength or who has made a special achievement in the face of danger or death? In my opinion, a hero can be an ordinary individual who is understanding and caring. A hero is also someone who is dedicated and considerate to others. Grandma Betty (Betty Seib), was a very generous, loyal, and open-minded lady, whose family came before anything to her.

Grandma Betty was, in all honesty, my second mother. She always made time for me. Daily phone calls and visits to her farm were always happening. My Grandma all together had 10 Grandchildren. Even though she had a big number of grandchildren she always made sure to attend all of their activities. Whether it was gymnastics, hockey, or figure skating. She always made the effort to make people happy and would even go out of her way to make someone smile. Grandma Betty was a strong individual with a huge heart and faith in God. She was always there to give us a hand when we were in need. She was the rock of our family and tied us all together. Grandma always made sure that the traditional values of being Christians were instilled in us and that holidays were spent together. She was always full of life. Grandma had a warm personality, was motivated, family oriented, and sympathetic, and she had a clear outlook on life.

My grandma was a very bold woman. Grandma Betty was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in September 24, 1949 into a very large family. Grandma had two loving parents, 4 sisters, and 2 brothers. My Grandma dropped out of school in grade ten to start a life with my Grandpa (Harvey Seib). My grandma had colon cancer for 2 years on and off but one day things were different. She was bleeding when she went to the bathroom so she went back to the doctor. Tests were done and when the results came in we were a shattered family. Our hopes for our grandma went down the drain and we all sat there and wondered to ourselves, "How long does she have left."

My Grandma lived with my Grandpa on a farm just 20 minutes out of town located just past Rihnland. At this farm she raised my mom, my uncle Alden, my auntie Sara, and my auntie Melissa. Once my parents grew up and moved on to University and started their own families. Most importantly, my grandma raised all of her grandchildren in a very special way. All of us would always have sleepovers out at her house. These sleepovers would consist of LOTS of eating!, making food, playing outside, and the thing that was most important to her; praying.

My Grandma is the most courageous and most amazing woman i have ever known. Even though she can't be here with me today i feel so lucky to have been able to call her MY grandma. Her faith always amazed me. No matter how sick she got or how scared she was, she would always turn to God. She always asked me, "Have you prayed today, do you still pray." My answer today is, Yes grandma i still pray, for the fact is that it makes me feel closer to you and I would do anything to be closer to you. For all these reasons i have talked about, my grandma is and will always be my hero. She will always be my inspiration.
