Would you get back on a board after a shark attack? Bethany Hamilton got back on her board within a month after a shark attack resulted in the loss of her arm. On October 31st, 2003 Bethany's whole life changed within a few hours and her new fear was if she would ever become a professional surfer. Bethany Hamilton shows her bravery, determination, and inspiring attitude every times she competes.
On Halloween 2003, Bethany went out for her morning surf as the waves and weather were perfect. Within a few hours, she woke up in a hospital bed with one major problem, her arm was gone. The doctors told her she would never be able to surf again even if she wanted to. But for her, that wasn't an option. Within a month of her recovery she stood up on her board again and shocked people all over the world with her bravery. She showed fans that a shark couldn't stop her from chasing her dream.
Bethany was determined to become a professional surfer. In 2007 her dream came true. She won 2nd place at the ASP 2009 World Junior Championships. Since her accident she has been competing in A class surfing tournaments and has won in over 134 competitions. The movie "Soul Surfer" was inspired by her and was a hit worldwide. The movie shows her story put together from the day her life was changed. She plans on competing as long as she can but she is always more aware where she surfs and the conditions of the water.
Many people all over the world have given up on something due to an illness or a missing limb. Bethany shows them that it doesn't matter your age or what you have or do not have, you can still reach your dream. She has traveled to talk to many people who have lost a limb and felt hopeless. A young boy recently lost his leg from a shark attack and Bethany is teaching him how to surf on a custom made board. She says that one reason she got back in the water so soon is to show people she wasn't defeated.
Would you ever give up on your dream? Bethany will always be an inspiration to me and people worldwide. She will continue to compete and keep her professional title. I hope people won't give up on their dreams. I hope they can be like Bethany by showing their bravery, determination, and attitude.
