bethany hamilton

by Jessica from Atglen

Bethany Hamilton is a surfer. She is going pro and she is only 20 years old. The thing I like most about Bethany is that she surfs with only one arm! She has smoothes every morning. Bethany used to joke about having salt water in her veins. Bethany says if you’re having a bad day, surfing will cheer you up. She was born on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. She stills lives there and surfs almost every day. She was born on February 8, 1990.

Bethany’s arm got bitten off by a 14ft tiger shark. When she was in the hospital her first question was when can I start surfing again? She has competed in many competitions and has won a lot of medals. Still with only one arm she is a fantastic surfer. She is a pro surfer and she is going to have a movie made about her life called “Soul Surfer”. Bethany had to overcome surfing with one arm. She also had to get used to standing up on the surf board because it was hard to get up on the board, it usually takes two arms to push yourself up.

For one thing Bethany was determined. Bethany was determined to get back up on the board and surf, she also wouldn’t give up. She also had a lot of courage. She had the courage to get on the surfboard after what happened with the tiger shark. Finally, she has conviction. Bethany believed she could surf and compete in a lot of contests and she did compete in a lot of contests.

I think Bethany Hamilton is a hero because it had to be hard to surf after the shark bit her arm off. But she didn’t give up, she kept trying. She is a hero to me because I think she is really brave to surf. Also because she is a pro surfer. Bethany lost a lot of blood and she could have died but she didn’t. That is why I think Bethany is a hero.
