David Bailey

by Timmy from Fredericksburg

Big white truck speeding down the line.

A hero to me is someone who has done something great. That doesn’t mean that they have to be superman or something; it just means that whatever they did, it was great. A hero should be well rounded in the way that he views the world. He should want to help others in some way and want to help himself. The way that the hero reacts to a situation can affect others in more ways than one. There are many ways that a hero could help. He could help by doing something big, such as save someone from a burning building, or he could do something as easy as staying alive.

When my hero David Bailey was a little boy he wanted to be a musician. David spent his childhood in Beirut, Lebanon. He learned his first chords from his seventh grade English teacher, then went on to study classical guitar. When he was 13 years old, he started to write his own music and lyrics. When he went to college he was still doing music, then he found that he really liked to do business so he switched and became a businessman. Later in his life, he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on July 4, 1996. The doctors told him that he would be dead by Christmas. When he found out he had the tumor, the only thing that he could worry about at the time was how his family would react. They were scared when they found out in the hospital that he had the worst kind of a brain tumor that you can have. Knowing that he had five months to live, he quit his job as a businessman and became a musician to live out his dream.

David Bailey is a great man in many ways. There are things about him that make him more than a cancer survivor. Although he might have survived it, imagine what it was like when he found it out. When he found out that he had the tumor, he had to go through a series of surgeries. Most of them were all something called chemo-therapy. During Chemo he had to have a ray pointed on his head where they would point in radiation in so that they could try to kill the tumor. During all of the surgeries, he had to be completely still or it wouldn’t work very well. He has great aspects to himself too. One aspect of him was that he not only survived for him but he survived for his family to.

He is now a really good musician. He has made thirteen albums and many songs. All of which are great, but there is one album that is my favorite. It has a great name also and it is Hope. I think that it is great that he can put in his CD what has happened in his life. Many of the songs that he has made have not only explained his life but also explained to me that nothing in life can be predicted. One of the songs that I am talking about is the song “On My Way to Nashville.” Here are a little of the lyrics from the song

"Big white truck speeding down the line.
He was braking, I was shaking,
But I knew the two of us were bound to meet
His big shiny fender was thicker than my jeans
So there I was, rolling on the street."

The song tells you about when he went to Tennessee. When he went there he got run over by a truck! He tells you how it happened and what he did. He tells you that he was shaking as the big white truck was speeding down the lane. It is amazing that he did not have any bruises or broken bones. It is a great way for him to tell his story. When he tells you what he has overcome it is a miracle.

There is no ending to this man. He can do anything that he puts his mind to and that is a great quality. He has done so much to survive this horrible disease. He overcame the odds. Although the doctors tell him that it is gone, he still goes to get check ups every year. He is my hero because of the qualities that he possesses. He is a living miracle and that is why he is my hero.
