My hero is Balto. Balto was a courageous dog and helped save many lives in 1925 from a deadly illness.

Balto was a Siberian husky and was in a sled team that carried a special serum, diphtheria antitoxin. This serum saved adult and childrens lives. Balto brought the serum to Nenana from Anchorage. Balto made it through snowstorms and many miles of tumbling in the snow and finding themselves lost. Togo the lead dog in the team found many places to stay and also found the path to Nenana, Alaska. The trip took many weeks to finish, and the dogs were tired and some had to wear shoes because their feet could freeze and that wouldn't be good.

Balto has a statue of him in New York. The creator of the statue is Fredrick Roth. In 1933 Balto died due to old age. His remains have been handed to a taxidermist and is now in a museum of natural history along with the remains of Togo.

Balto was a good and brave dog that survived the serum run. He saved many lives and he is my hero.
