What do you think a hero is? Most people think that a hero is someone like Superman, Batman or Robin. But when I hear the word hero, I think of people who survived in Hurricane Katrina, or all the other people who survived in 9/11, but my hero just did match that perspective; his name is Ludwig van Beethoven.

My hero is Ludwig Van Beethoven. He was born on December 16, 1770, and he lived in Bonn, Germany. He became deaf at the age of 28 and still wrote seven other symphonies, so here is the story of how he was pushed to keep at it and stay with the piano. Ludwig Van Beethoven’s dad and grandfather were both musicians. His dad and his grandfather inspired him to write and play music ever since he was four. When Beethoven was seven, he played his first music on the piano in public in front of over 45 people.

His dad would drag him out of bed at 2:00 am in the morning so he could practice. His dad didn’t care how hard Beethoven had worked, he just cared that he would make him a lot of money. When Beethoven was sixteen, he traveled to Vienna to meet Mozart. He wanted to stay in Vienna but his mother became ill. His mother died and she left Beethoven and the rest of her kids with their drunken father. So when he was eighteen, he took full responsibility of the family.

Ludwig van Beethoven was a great example of a survivor hero; he blends together with T.A Barron’s description of a surviving hero in many different ways. First of all, he had made a big difference in everybody’s life by writing beautiful music that everybody loved, including Mozart. Lastly he kept playing the piano, even when he was completely deaf. That is why Ludwig Van Beethoven is a surviving hero.

So now you know about Ludwig Van Beethoven; and you now what kind of hero that he is. So the next time you hear the word hero don’t think of action figures like Superman, think of people who are fighting right now for the United States in Iraq, or all the other heroes who have made a change in people’s lives. The reason why I chose Beethoven was that he matched all of his goals that he wanted to accomplish when he was a little kid.
