Harry Belafonte

Novalis believed that a hero is “a person who hangs on one minute longer.” A hero is a person that is persistent and is extremely devoted. He/she always dedicates his or her time to help people. Reliable and selfless are only some of the qualities that a hero possesses on a daily basis. Harry Belafonte is a hero in Jamaica for his great abilities.

Harry Belafonte was born in Harlem, New York on March 1, 1927. He moved with his mom to Jamaica, but returned to New York. Harry went to George Washington High School. As he got older, he began a career in singing. Belafonte was known the most for the singing of “Banana Boat Song.” Also, he was known for his Calypso songs. Harry was the winner of the Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement. Harry Belafonte was the first black man to win an Emmy Award for his own TV special called, Tonight With Belafonte.

Harry is a person who has dreams and goes for them. Belafonte had one dream for civil rights. In 1963, Washington D.C had a Civil Rights March to help black people gain the same privileges as white people. Harry spoke a part in the fight for those rights. Also, he made various statements on Soviet peace. Belafonte wrote a song called “We Are the World” to raise money for Africa. Belafonte was included in the fight to find a cure for prostate cancer. Harry was appointed as a good will ambassador to UNICEF.

Harry Belafonte has very strong and good qualities! He is a very bold man because he always has courage and never gives up. He is a risk-taker because he helps people all over the world no matter where they are and does it with great courage. Belafonte is a very intelligent and open minded person! He is very talented and skilled in his art in music! He is a responsible and heroic man!
