While some sports players become stars and lose their sense of direction, it’s good to know there are still good sports role models. My hero is one of them. He has dedicated his time, money, and energy to the Sunshine Kids. My hero is the Houston Astros’ 20 year veteran, Craig Biggio.

Craig Biggio was born on December 14th 1965. Craig graduated from Seton Hall during the year of 1987. As his career, he chose to become a Major League Baseball player and has persevered in baseball for 20 years. His entire MLB career has been spent with the Astros. He made his MLB debut in 1988 and quickly established himself on the daily roster. To this date Craig Biggio has been the only Catcher\Second baseman to be an all star as both.

Craig Biggio has hosted the Craig Biggio Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament many times over the years. The tournament has raised over $1 million dollars during these years. ”There is nothing miraculous here. What I’m doing is just about making kids with cancer feel good about themselves,” Craig told reporters. For more than two decades Craig Biggio has supported the Sunshine Kids Foundation. “The Sunshine Kids is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing positive group activities to children with cancer. The Sunshine Kids provides a variety of programs, events, free of charge, for children who are receiving cancer treatments around America.”

I look up to Craig Biggio because he gives to people who have nothing. I wish the world would be more like Biggio and other philanthropists who give to those less fortunate than themselves. From that day in 1987 when he was drafted to when he retired from baseball in 2007 he has always thought about others before thinking about himself. This is why I chose Craig Biggio as my hero.
