Paul David Hewson might not be a name that the average person would recognize. But if someone were to throw out the name Bono, for which he is more commonly known, a whole world of accomplishments comes to mind. Bono, a man some say was destined to be amazing, is one of the most caring people in the world; he is a leading activist in AIDS research, Global Environmental Protection, stimulating Third World Countries’ Economies, and a world renowned musician, as the lead singer for the band U2.
Bono was born on May 10, 1960, in Dublin, Ireland, the second child, he led a quiet life but was inspired to help people. When his mother passed, his foundation for life was shaken. This tragic event made Bono yearn to help others. Driven to help people, Bono and his friends started the soon to be known world famous band U2. They toured the globe and their fame only grew. They became a rock sensation whose music went to the top of charts. They even received such prestigious awards as a Grammy. Although Bono achieved so much fame he still never forgot his dream to help others as he was inspired to do as a child.
Global Environmental Protection is a big issue for which Bono is a leading advocate. In 1990, he partnered with Greenpeace to campaign against the production of nuclear power and the formation of new nuclear power plants. He also performed and orchestrated a string of concerts that inspired others to take action against global warming and climate change.
Stimulating third world countries’ economies is also a monumental cause supported by Bono. He devotes unbelievable amounts of time to the betterment of Africa and also other countries in poverty. In 2000, he became the spokesperson for the world renowned Jubilee project, rallying many actors, artist, campaigners, and everyday people to help struggling nations. In 2002, he also helped the ONE campaign to make poverty history with the US and in 2004 the relatively same movement with the UK. In 2005, he stared and created a series of 8 concerts pressuring world leaders to improve terms of trade with the world’s poorest countries. Bono was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the Jubilee project.
AIDS research is one of Bono’s top priorities. The disease AIDS which is easily spread attacks the immune system and makes the body extremely vulnerable to other illnesses. It is incurable so far. Therefore, AIDS prevention and research is a common emphasis Bono tries to incorporate within many of his projects. The Jubilee project also helps AIDS research. He created the group (DATA) Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa trying to raise money to help these cause within African nations and the world. The string of 8 concerts was also planned to assist in the future of AIDS research and proceeds went to this cause. Bono also co-founded the project (RED) which persuades companies to produce certain lines of their products were a portion of the proceeds go to AIDS, Malaria, and TB research.
Bono is a man all people should inspire and achieve to be. His love for all things good is something which can’t be taught but only one can hope to achieve. One day his dreams might come to be realized.. Until then, all we can do is follow in Bono’s footsteps and try to help causes like the ones he supports.
