C.S. Lewis

by Micah from Alabama

"After all, the Irish are the only people.....I would not willingly live and die among another folk."

C.S. Lewis was an author of astounding proportions. He wrote childrens literature and religious books for adults. His conversion to Christianity shocked the world. When C.S. Lewis first abandoned Christianity, he was 13. He enlisted in the British Army after he won a scholarship to University College, Oxford. During WWI, He was injured and suffered from depression while in the hospital. Lewis was 31 when he finally overcame his atheism. After words he wrote, "You must picture me alone in that room in Magdalen, night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet. That which I greatly feared had at last come upon me. In the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England."

C.S. Lewis wrote a number of popular novels including, the Space Trilogy, The Screwtape Letters ,and his fantasy the Chronicles of Narnia. Most of his religious books for adults deal with Christian values such as sin, the fall of Adam and Eve, and redemption from sin. When asked when he was going to write another book, Lewis replied,” When I understand the meaning of prayer.” Lewis wrote a number of books on Heaven and Hell; for example The Great Divorce, was a reference to William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.

C.S. Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in Belfast, Ireland. He later moved to Oxford for a job and a degree. Due to the fact of his Oxford career, he did indeed live and die “among another folk”. He is now buried in the Churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, Headington, Oxford.

C.S. Lewis lived from 1898 to 1963. He died due to kidney failure on November 22, 1963. His death was overlooked because of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the death of Aldous Huxley. This significant event inspired Peter Kreef to write the book Between Heaven and Hell: A Dialogue Somewhere Beyond Death with John F. Kennedy, C.S. Lewis, and Aldous Huxley.

C.S. Lewis

C.S. Lewis has made a difference in my life mainly for two reasons: one, he wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, and second he overcame his atheism (however reluctantly) to become a Christian. Proving, as he has in his books, that Good will always triumph over Evil.
