Chance the Rapper

by Christian from Newark

"Don't make songs for free, I make 'em for freedom...Don't believe in kings, believe in the Kingdom"

Chance the Rapper grew up as Chancelor Johnathan Bennett and was born in Chicago, Illinois, April 16, 1993. During his childhood, he gained a lot of interest in music when his grandmother played soul and gospel music throughout his home. He grew a lot of attention after his second mixtape called "Acid Rain" in 2013 and was brought to the mainstream appeal in 2016 with the release of "Coloring Book".

In his early career he was part of a group known as "Save Money" which included artists like Vic Mensa and Towkio who were Chicago's young hip hop group to appeal a large audience. Chance the Rapper then became part of another group called "The Social Experiment" which the group propelled their free album, "Surf" in 2015. Overall, Chance the Rapper continues to expand his music to attract a bigger audience by incorporating gospel style hip hop.

Chance the Rapper's motive in the music industry is not for the revenue and profits. In fact, every single project or song he has released was free to the public. In addition, Chance the Rapper is not signed to any major music label and is an independent artist.

Throughout recent years, Chance had collaborated with other highly profiled artists like the song "Ultralight Beam" off of Kanye's West "The Life of Pablo" album. He is also featured on many television performances including three appearances on Saturday Night Live. Chance the Rapper also was invited to the White House for a Christmas performance during Barack Obama's presidency.

In conclusion, Chance the Rapper is my hero because of his dedication he puts into his work, raising awareness on issues with his community, and aiding others in need of help. Chance is currently donating a million dollars to public schools in Chicago who desperately need assistance financially. His music connects with people and uplifts them even at their lowest points. That is why Chance the Rapper is my hero.
