Dr.Best and Dr.Banting (ctv.ca ()) |
Have you ever spent almost your whole life studying one thing, trying to help people all over the world? I chose Dr. Charles Best as my Hero because he helped discover insulin, a drug that extends the lives of people with Diabetes. I am interested to know how he discovered insulin. Dr. Best did very important research to help men, women and children from the killing disease. Dr. Best was a friend of my Grandfather Dr. Hancock. I will tell you more about Dr. Best's life.
Dr. Best's mother and father were Luella Fisher and Herbert Hudson Best. Dr. Best was born in 1899 on February 27th and his birth place was West Pembroke, Washington County, Maine. Dr. Best died March 31st, 1978 at the age of 79. He went to school at the University of Toronto.
One of the most difficult obstacles was he wanted to be Dr. Banting's assistant, but Dr. Best had to do a coin toss to become Dr. Banting's assistant. Dr. Best overcame the obstacles by flipping the coin to see who would win. Dr. Best won the coin toss and became Dr. Banting's assistant. This is the obstacle he had to overcome. Also I am sure many people did not believe in what he was doing so it must have been difficult to believe in himself.

First of all Dr. Best went to the University of Toronto. In 1918 he enlisted in the Canadian army serving with the 2nd Canadian Tank Battle Station, when he was 22 he was the assistant to Dr. Fredric Banting but Dr. Best didn't just get to be Fredric's assistant just like that, Dr. Best had to do a coin toss to become his assistant and also prove himself. Dr. Banting started to get interested in Diabetes and decided that he and Dr. Best would find the cure for Diabetes. I would consider Dr. Best a hero because he did hard work with Banting to change the world. They worked hard so there would be one less medical problem. Dr. Best achieved many goals but I think the most important achievement was becoming an assistant to Dr. Banting, the reason why, is because with Dr. Banting, Dr. Best would not be able to achieve his unique goal to find the solution of Diabetes. Dr. Best was very successful to inject insulin into dogs and they achieved their most important discovery, the first human to be injected with insulin was a 10 year old who was almost close to death. The insulin worked and young boy's life was saved. These are the great achievements and actions of Dr. Charles Best.
Dr. Best's most important character trait is respect because if Dr. Best did not have respect he would not have saved all the live he did. The second most important character trait is caring because if Dr. Best did not care he would not want to save people with diabetes. The last most important character trait is sharing because he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Dr. Banting. These are Dr. Best's character traits.
My Hero influences me because he did an incredible discovery, saving people's lives all over the world. He helped others have a healthy lifestyle, also he inspired me to do something different everyday even though no one will believe in me, but I will still try to do my best and use my own ideas to improve my work and who knows maybe I will do something great. This is how my hero influences me to be the best that I can be and to never give up.
Have you ever wondered what happens when you eat and where it goes? Well, this is the cycle how insulin in important to your healthy body.
1. First you eat some food
2. Next it goes into your stomach
3. Then it turns into liquid
4. The liquid eventually turns into something called Glucose
5. Glucose is food that has broken down into sugars
6. As you probably know, cells are in your blood
7. Glucose needs to get into your cells, without insulin the Glucose can not get into your cells.
Diabetes is when our bodies do not have enough insulin to let the Glucose in your cells
Thank you for reading my article . I have learned a lot about Dr. Best and how he helped invent insulin and I hope you did too. THANK YOU !
