Christopher Columbus

My hero is Christopher Columbus. He sailed the ocean blue in 1492. He was born in 1451 at Genoa. Columbus was not the first to reach America from Europe. Leif Ericson was the first to reach America from Europe.

He departed from Palos de la Frontera. He had three ships called Santa Maria, Nina, and Pinta. Columbus first sailed to the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands were owned by Castile. He restocked and made repairs. On the 6th of September Columbus departed from San Sebastian de la Comera. He was spotted at 2 a.m. on August 3 1492 by a sailor named Rodrigo de Triana.

Christopher Columbus left Cadiz on September 24, 1493. He had 17 ships and 1200 men. On October 13 ships left the Canary Islands. On November 3, 1493 Columbus spotted an island called Dominica. Later he found Marie Galante which he called Santa Maria de Calante. He landed at Guadeloupe and searched between November 4th and the 10th of 1493. Michele da Cuneo sailed with Columbus.

On the 30th of May 1498, Columbus left with six ships from Sanlucar Spain. Columbus's father Bartolome de las Casas went on the trip with him. Columbus led the fleet to Porto Santo where his wife lived. From the beginning of August to August 12 he explored the Gulf of Paria. He explored South America. Columbus sighted and named Tobago and Gronaga.

Columbus made a fourth voyage in search of Strait Malacca. His brother Bartolomeo and his son Fernando left on the trip with him. He left Spain on the 11 of May 1502. He left with the ships Capitana, Gallega, Vizcaina, and Santiago de Palos. He sailed to Arzila to rescue Portuguese soldiers from the Moors. On the 20 of May 1506 at the age of 55 Columbus died.
