Carlos Magana

by Carlos from Ontario

"Help others, but don't expect something in return."

On June 13, 1960 my hero was not even one day old yet. Although I was born many years after that; little did he know he would be someone's hero. As I was growing up in the 2000's, I knew he was my hero. My hero is someone that is in my daily life, whom I see every day, who I care about. My hero is my dad. He is my hero because he shows me not to give up in life and to not be negative even if life is cruel, unfair, and just straight out mean. He is fun joyful, and never mean or angry.

My dad was born in Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico. My dad's name is Carlos, the same name as mine, so don't be tricked when you hear Carlos. He finished high school in Mexico and in the USA, and has a diploma. He has 3 sisters, 2 brothers, plus a mom, but his dad died. An interesting fact from his youth was that when he was nine years old he left his home to go study in a boarding school. Rules and discipline influenced my dad to be responsible and to be how he is right now. It built his personality in life.

Some obstacles my dad faced were the lack of opportunities. He was not able to do what he wanted to do in Mexico. He overcame his obstacle by chasing what he wanted to do in a different country. He went from Mexico to the USA. What my dad did that to make me consider him a hero was that after my mom and him got married he came to the USA legally, but was not able to see my mom at all because she was in Mexico and did not have any legal documents to come to the USA. While my mom was in Mexico my dad worked day and night to get money for my mom's documents. That was over one year and a half of not seeing my mom. Pretty heroic, and caring if I may say so myself.

An example of a hero's actions is that my dad cares about us and puts us in front of him. He wants us to be safe and to be healthy. He makes sure we do not do anything that can be harmful to us. My dad outside of the family, can help others, and treats people with respects. Some achievements and accomplishments my hero did was being punctual during his early age and learning everything he could to use it in his life. Last but not least, probably the most important was being independent in life.

Some character traits that my hero displays are being hard working, caring, reasonable, creative, and persistence. My dad is hard working because sometimes when he does not get something he works at it over and over again. He is caring because when my sisters and I get sick he stops his work and takes us to the doctor. He is responsible like the time he went to work even though he works outside and it was raining. My dad is also creative just like the time I had a science project and did not know what to put on it, he gave me a good idea that made my project creative. He is persistent because when he tells you to do it. My hero influenced me to not give up, to not let anybody get in my way of my dream, to not be someone I am not, to achieve my goals in life, to help people and to not expect something in return, to be positive and happy, but never angry. Most importantly to enjoy life the way you want to be. I think my dad influences me in a positive way. I am happy that my dad influenced me in that way. He is a hero because he is emotionally strong, never gives up, and is always dependable.
