Courtney Neely

by Laura

People admired the ancient Greek heroes for their bravery and great acts of courage, but what the Greeks didn't do was look at the little things. My hero is my mother, Courtney Neely. My mother was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. After she and my dad got married they moved to Atlanta were they both had jobs as lawyers. When my dad got a job at Gulfstream my parents moved in to a house on Washington Street, and that is the first house I ever lived in. Ever since I was born we have lived in Savannah, Georgia. Now that you know some background on my mother, you will be able to get to know her more.

My mother has done many minor things, even though people may not comprehend it. My mother is kindhearted and can't stay mad at you for long. My mother always tries to volunteer when she can and she never expects anything in return for her good deeds. People don't realize it sometimes, but it's the little things that make all the difference. I also admire my mother for her education; she went to the university of Tennessee and was very strong in math. My mother always helps me with my homework when I need it and tries to explain everything as thoroughly as she can. Whenever my mom isn't sure how I was educated in a problem, she looks in the math book to make sure she doesn't confuse me. My mother is also very willing and doesn't mind taking the heavy load, or a car full of barn girls. My mother always takes me to the barn and drives me to all of my horse shows. My mother eliminates time out of her day and away from the rest of her family to help me. Finally and foremost my mother is almost always in the church nursery with a cluster of little three year olds. Even though I help her, she still bears a lot of responsibility. Sometimes we have close to twenty kids, and only one other helper besides my mother and me. As you can see, the little things really do add up.

Most ancient Greek heroes are very diverse from the modern day heroes we have today. My mother is comparable to an ancient Greek hero because she and the Greek heroes are or were admired by at least one person. My mother and the ancient Greeks are very much like chalk and cheese because my mother isn't tremendously muscular and she doesn't go into battle. My mother isn't boastful and she does little things that count. Even though my mother isn't saving the world at the moment, she truly is a hero in my mind.
