Cheryl Bernard is the skip for team Canada and recently competed in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. Cheryl was born in Grande Prairie Alberta and began curling at the age of eight. Cheryl now lives in Calgary with her spouse, Terry. In the 2010 Winter Olympic Games Cheryl lost to Sweden in the 11th end with a 7-6 loss. Although she didn’t take home gold Cheryl said, “We didn’t lose the gold… we won the silver.” Cheryl also said that her favorite part of the whole experience was hearing the crowd cheering and yelling. But my favorite thing she said was that she doesn’t look at the glass as half empty but as half full.

As you know, Cheryl started curling as a young girl and evolved into a famous adult female curler and Olympian. Her first Alberta Provincial final game was in 1988. Even though she lost, four yeas later she ended up winning the title. In 1995 Cheryl lost the Alberta Provincial final again, but that didn’t stop her. At the ‘96 Tournament of Hearts Cheryl and her team and her consisting of Karen Ruus, Barb Sherrington, Judy Pendergast took first place. For the next eleven years Cheryl failed to make another National Championship. Finally, in 2007 she won yet another National Championship making that her third. Cheryl’s team won yet another title in 2009 and represented Alberta at the 2009 Tournament of Hearts. Cheryl’s amazing success qualified them for the 2009 Olympic trials. Her team won the trials and ended up winning silver at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Cheryl was born into a very loving family. Her brother Don is a chiropractor in the United States. Although Cheryl’s father passed away a few years ago her mother Pat remains her biggest fan and supporter. Cheryl owned and operated Fleming Insurance for many years. She sold it to focus on her curling career. A year before the Olympics Cheryl started another insurance company that she still owns today. Cheryl is a well-rounded athlete. She loves the outdoors and is an extremely gifted golfer. Cheryl also loves spending time hanging out with family and friends.

Cheryl Bernard is a well-rounded person and has persevered to finally make her dreams come true. She represented Canada and did our country proud when she took home the silver medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Cheryl’s ever-present beaming smile reflects the fun loving positive person she is on the inside. As a personal friend and heroine of mine I am proud to know such a leader and role model. She also taught many people that you don’t have to win gold to be a champion.
