Cleopatra VII Philopator

by Marcela from Buenos Aires

She was a daughter of Ptolemy XII, Cleopatra rose with seventeen years to the throne of Egypt with her brother Ptolemy XIII.

She was a smart, ambitious and beautiful woman who was sent into exile by the minister of her brother for having conspired against him. Cleopatra won the support of Julius Cesar who, after arriving to Alexandria, forced the two brothers to share the power. Ptolemy XIII, dissatisfied with this, rebelled but was defeated and killed by the troops of his sister, with the help of the Romans.

She was Cesar's mistress and had a son called Ptolemy Caesarion. After the assassination of the Roman dictator, Cleopatra returned to Egypt and began a prosperous reign. In 41 B.C.E. the Egyptian queen met in Tarsus Mark Anthony, who with help defeated murderers of Cesar in Philippi.

Mark Anthony had fallen in love with Cleopatra and repudiated his wife, who was the sister of Octavian Augustus. Humiliated, Augustus promoted the war against Egypt, accusing Antony and Queen Cleopatra to conspire to create an independent state in the east. One year after that began the war, the Roman fleet destroyed the Egyptian fleet.

They after that fleeing from Alexandria, Mark Anthony committed suicide, believing Cleopatra had already done so as well. She decided however to seek the clemency of Octavio Augustus, but to no avail and in turn committed suicide to avoid the humiliation of participating in the victory of her enemy.
