He is a commentator at the Channel CBC with his colleague Ron Maclean and Don Cherry has been giving his expert opinion on hockey, for 34 years now. He is energetic, dynamic when he talks about hockey. Don Cherry, also named as 'Grapes', was an actor and editor in the movie Gold Rush (2002) and The Wild(2006) and a long standing coach for multiple hockey teams in his career.
Donald Stewart Cherry was born on the 5th of February ,1934, in Kingston, Ontario Canada. His parents are Maude Cherry and Delmar Cherry, and his only sibling is Dick Cherry. Don was married to Rosemarie from 1957 to 1997 and she died of liver cancer. He had two children, Tim and Cindy Cherry. Two years later, Don married Luba Cherry and is presently still married to her. Don is a retired NHL and OHL player from 1968-1969 seasons. A couple of years later, he became a coach in the OHL for four years and then he merge into the NHL as a head coach for the Boston Bruins. Don Cherry won two awards in 1973-74, AHL: The Louis A.R.Pieri Memorial Award and in 1975-76, in the NHL, The Jack Adams Award. This means he was the best coach of the year twice in a row.
Don Cherry's five greatest qualities are that he is unique, he always wear something out of the ordinary, for example: sometimes he wears the colour pink because for him it is a sign of respect to the death of Rosemarie, also, he is passionate of hockey because first of all, all he does is talk about hockey and he also played before. Although, Don Cherry's best quality is that he has the ability to say what he thinks, and say what he believes. For example, during the last Winter Olympics, he gave his opinion on why did the Quebecois carried a Canadian flag but not a Quebec flag. Don got chastised by his boss afterwards about his comment, but I think that is a quality that I have as well. If Don has a statement or a comment to tell he will not be afraid to say it. He is hero , a hockey hero, because he's 80 year old and he still working and comment on what he loves the most and for this, many people look up to him.
Don Cherry has done the best he can for me. For example, just by standing there in front of a camera makes him a hero to me, because it means he must be confident, brave, happy and for the fact that he loves hockey just as much as I do. Towards his journey, he had big obstacles to overcome. The biggest one to overcome was when his ex wife died of a cancer, in fact a liver cancer on June 1st, 1997. Don Cherry did a heroic move by wearing clothing pink at least once a week to remember his wife that died of cancer. Also, his son developed a kidney disease and he needed a transplant and luckily Cindy was a match.
Don Cherry is a very good man overall unless if his brashness and sharing your opinion is not your thing. My personal connection with Don Cherry is that we have a lot of things in common. For example, loving hockey, being competitive, not afraid to say your true thought about something or someone, being respectful and many other qualities. Don had to overcome a couple of obstacles in his family, but I also had a couple of obstacles myself. For example, The death of my dog and cat, the death of my two grandfathers and one of my grandmothers. Me and Don are not that different at all, the only major difference may be an age difference. Don Cherry will always be my idol, hero for the rest of my life and I will try to follow his footsteps by trying to join either the NHL or Being a commentator just like him.
