Hi, I am Kendall Griffin, and I chose my grandfather, David Rice Dennis, as my unsung hero. He served in the Navy during WWII. He was a teacher, a marathon runner, and he helped his community. He inspired his family and his favorite motto was "Be Prepared". Though he died of Leukemia before I was born, I feel like I know him. I interviewed my mother and she gave me the information about his life.
David Rice Dennis had a wonderful childhood. He was born raised in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania. He lived with his parents, brother, and three sisters. When he was sixteen he decided to join the Navy and serve in WWII. He liked life on the ship and was proud of his service to his country. The Navy gave him the opportunity to go to college on the GI Bill. He graduated from both Penn State and Temple University. Afterwards, he taught science at a high school in Philadelphia. He loved teaching and was admired by his students. In the evening he taught night school to help adults in the community earn their high school diploma.
David Rice Dennis loved sports. He coached soccer, played tennis and liked to swim in the ocean. He encouraged his family to stay active and eat healthy. Running was his favorite sport. He ran all the time even in the snow and rain. He ran the Boston Marathon three times.
My grandfather loved his family more than anything in the world. He had a beautiful voice and always sang to them. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with them. He took them on trips so they could see the world. He wanted them to experience different cultures.
As you can see, David Rice Dennis, my grandfather did a lot of amazing things in the world. He is an unsung hero because he fought in the war and he loved his family with all his heart. If my grandfather were living today I would give him a huge hug and tell him about every thing I have accomplished in my life. My grandfather and I are a lot alike. We share the same interests of music, running and love for our family.
