Dale Dunning

by Isabel from Georgetown

" If you love me, feed my sheep." St. John 21:15-17

Dale Dunning, working to make a difference one soup ladle at a time. She is a true hero, even if someone with a big pot of soup may not look like it. If you think that the only place there are hunger problems are in Haiti and Africa. You might need a little lesson from Mrs. Dunning. Hunger problems are everywhere. There could be a kid in your class that even has hunger issues that you don't know about. But, Dale wants this tragedy to end. And I have no doubts that the Jusst Sooup Ministy will be able to stop Delaware hunger.

Dale wasn't always going to try to get rid of hunger problems though. At first, she was trying to become a preacher. But, "a call from God" came and said to Dale "you can't preach to people who don't have food in their stomachs!" That's when Dale took action, and gave birth to the Jusst Sooup Ministry. Little did Dale know that her ministry wouldn't be serving "just soup."

Rev. Dunning does so much more than give out soup to the hungry. She won't turn someone away, even if she hasn't got a clue about how to fix the current problem. This woman has helped an elderly man learn to write his name and put other people in motels so they can get a decent night's sleep. She has given a homeless family a pot because they needed it to eat and bathe. Dale estimates that her ministry has served about 6,800 homeless people in five years.

Dale understands these people's suffering. She lost her own home due to a foreclosure. Now, she lives in Lewes, Delaware. She says that it was "a blessing in disguise." Dale still works as hard as ever - her day starting at about 6 a.m. and ending at 6 p.m. and serving Monday through Friday. Sometimes she has all of her Crock-pots cooking soup at once. Rev. Dale Dunning has no easy job. She travels from Assateague Island, all the way to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, all in a week.

Dale has worked diligently for almost 15 years. Her ministry has done what had never been achieved before." I'm the most blessed person in the world" she said, "I serve the people."

She has inspired me to help out, even if I am not exactly happy doing it. Dunning has really served it up for this community.
