Diane Guerrero's book "In The Country We Love" (http://www.gettyimages.com/event/diane-guerrero-bo) |
"My parents were hardworking people who loved this country so much that they pursued legal citizenship, and when I was fourteen, my family was deported"(EMILY'S LIST). Ripped away from her family and forced to go through life on her own, Diane Guerrero is a child of immigrants that the government stole from her. She was the same age as me, fourteen, when she came home, in 2001, to an empty house to discover that her parents had been deported. Her parents are hard-working people that came from Columbia to seek a better life in America. Today she fights for immigration reform in America. She is known for her roles in Orange Is The New Black and Jane The Virgin. She also wrote a book called In The Country We Love to share her story and let others like her know that they are not alone. To be a hero you must be brave and determined. To be brave is to stand strong even when times are tough and never give up. To be determined is when one doesn't give in to the "norm" and stands strong in their ideals. Diane Guerrero is a deserving hero because she is a strong independent woman that stayed brave and determined through the tough predicament she endured and came out with a strong voice to reform America's flawed immigration system.

Diane Guerrero is brave because she was able to be valiant through the deportation of her parents and going through life on her own. When she was in ninth grade she came home to a silent house with the feeling of something amiss. Looking back on that day, Diane Guerrero states, "I came home from school to an empty house. Lights were on and dinner had been started, but my family wasn't there. Neighbors broke the news that my parents had been taken away by immigration officers, and just like that, my stable family life was over" ("Diane Guerrero"). In the span of a day, her normal, everyday life was ripped away from her. She only had her neighbors to help. She pushed through high school and eventually went to college. From college she gained a degree in political science and communication. Even though she was brave and made it through this tough time in her life, she still faced some mental difficulties. Guerrero explains that, "You don't think about all the psychological and emotional damage that happened and everything that I was suppressing and all my anger and fear and resentment and pain that started slowly creeping up and I pretty much, I think, had PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) because I was so, so traumatized" ("Immigration Debate"). She was traumatized and dealt with depression, but she was still brave because she didn't let those get the best of her. She pushed through these obstacles and was valiant about making it through. Diane Guerrero went through something extremely tough for a fourteen year-old and anyone in general. "I stayed here, and it broke my heart to watch them go. I have experienced firsthand what it is like to be separated from your family because of our outdated immigration system" (EMILY'S LIST). Guerrero is brave by putting attention on America's 'outdated immigration system' in the commercial to raise awareness on the effect that it has on families. She is using her fame for the benefit of others instead of centering all of the attention around her. This is a brave action to take because most people want to keep the attention on themselves or materialistic goods. For example, celebrities advertising misleading goods to modify one's appearance. Diane Guerrero is brave because she pushed her way through the tough times in her life, obstacles in her way, and brings attention to America's 'outdated immigration system'. Not only is she brave, but determined as well.
Diane Guerrero is determined because she became successful and currently throws her voice out into the world for the sake of others with similar stories. She didn't give into her depression from the separation of her parents, but instead, "Guerrero received a degree in political science and communication and then decided to pursue an acting career" ("Diane Guerrero"). She didn't let the absence of her parents drag her down through life, but instead, empower her to make a difference in immigration. The degree in political science gives her the credentials and her acting career gives her a platform to bring attention to the import subject of immigration reform. Diane Guerrero states that a wall is, "not going to keep away people who are running away from dire situations" ("Immigration Debate"). She is determined to let other people know the truth. A wall will not fix anything. In another interview she says how her mom kept coming back for her after she had already been deported. On top of her acting career, Diane Guerrero says, "Today, I fight for immigration reform because I don't want any other young girl to live through what my family went through. She is determined to not let any other young girl, or child, live through what she went through. She wants to let those kids know that they are not alone. She has determination to speak out when others don't want 'people like her' here. Diane Guerrero is a hero because of her determination to make a change in America's flawed immigration system which allows children such as her past self to make it through life on their own.

Diane Guerrero's book "In The Country We Love" (http://www.latintimes.com/diane-guerrero-new-book-) |
Diane Guerrero is a deserving hero because she uses her voice to speak out against what she believes in for the benefit of others due to her bravery and determined nature. Bravery is an important asset to have because it is confronting what is difficult to accept, such as pain, hard truths, and disappointments. The virtue of determination is as important as bravery because it is the sign of a strong soul. Diane Guerrero is an inspiration because she never gave up. From her hardship, she realized that other families are dealing with deportation struggles as well. In an interview, Diane Guerrero says, "I want them to know that there are so many people that can connect to them, and could help them, and if we band together, if we work together, and become politically active, we can make some changes" ("Immigration Debate"). She is an inspiration because she was able to fight through her pain and do something with her life that can benefit others. She inspires me because she was able to make it through her physical and mental issues and see a light at the end of the tunnel. Her triumph reminds me that I can make it past the hardships in my life, big or small, and this is not the end. Diane Guerrero is a deserving hero because of her determination and desire to help others in similar situations.
