by Erin

My dad loved to travel, it was his chance to see the world. Every time He left He gained more responsibility.

David Jeffery was born in Hamilton, New York, but was raised in Norfolk, New York. He was the youngest of eight children. David's dad died when David was 15. He had to step up and help out his mother because all of his brothers and sisters had already moved out. After his dad died, David decided not to go to college. His dad was a great man so he wanted to be more like him. He decided he wanted to help his country. David Joined the army in 1985. He was seventeen and had just graduated high school. Most of his siblings had gone into the Navy Seals or Air Force so he wanted to do something different.

When David first signed up to be in the Army, he was only seventeen. He joined the Army school program and was recruited on December 12, 1984. He was in the Army Reserve for 1.5 year David as an infantry foot soldier.

After being in the Army, he changed to the Navy because he wanted to do active duty. When he first joined the Navy, he was an Aviation ordnance man. While he was an aviation man he became a Navy law enforcement officer. He needed to go to military police academy. When he was a police officer, it was his job to protect the weapons' vault. Then he stopped being a police officer and was just an Aviation ordnancemen. He needed to deal with aircraft weapon systems and aircraft weapons (bombs). David got to work on VA34 A6 intruders and VFA 34 FA18 hornets.

In 2001 David became the Ordnance Chief. He said, "Being the chief comes with major change in responsibility." When he was overseas it was his responsibility to make sure nothing happened to the planes. He and his men had to work together to build the bombs and make sure everything was in order.

David Jeffery is my dad. He was in the military for 20 years. He enjoyed every minute of it except when he was away from his family. When my dad retired my brother was eight, I was six and my sister was not even a year old. My dad missed a lot of special moments in our lives because he was away so much. Every time he left, he was sad to leave, but he knew he made a commitment and he needed to follow through with that.
