Don Cherry

by Colin from Barrie

My hero is Don Cherry because he is one of the greatest people involved in hockey. Don has changed the game of hockey for people of all ages. He changed hockey for everyone because he makes it fun and inspires people to be better at the sport. Don is one of the top 10 greatest Canadians ever. Don Cherry has traveled around the world doing amazing things to help people and make the world a better place. Don went to Africa to help build schools for the kids who couldn't go to school. Don is a huge fan of Remembrance Day and the military.

I chose Don Cherry as my hero because he was in the middle of writing a letter back to Chase McEachern and he passed because he had heart problems. He donated a great amount of money to the Chase McEachern fund. Chase was a big fan and he also played ice hockey. That is not the only thing Don has done, he has done many things involved with people, hockey and the army.

He was born on February 5th, 1934 in Kingston, Ontario. He went to Queens University and was in math and language academic classes. He was one of the most talented athletes in the school.

Don Cherry's family members are his Grandpa Jack Cherry who was a police officer, his other grandpa Richard was in the war, his mom Del Cherry and his dad Maude Cherry. His wife Rose died at the age of 40 fighting liver cancer, and his two kids were Cindy and Tim Cherry. His English Bull Terrier dog's name was Blue.

3 members of Don's family were in the war: his grandpas Jack and Richard and his dad Maude. When he was a child he learned many things with mom and not his dad. When his dad came back from war Don became more aggressive and strong because he started learning from his dad.

Chase McEachern changed Don's life because Chase was a huge fan of Don's and always dreamed of meeting him. Don was in the middle of writing Chase a letter when Chase passed away.

Don Cherry had many obstacles in his life because 3 members of his family went to war. He grew up with his mother and didn't get to learn as much as he wanted from his dad and his grandpa Jack and Richard. He overcame these obstacles because he stopped thinking about them and always knew they would come back.

I consider Don Cherry my hero because he is one of the greatest Canadians in history and he donates a lot of money to funds, charities and he makes time to do stuff with the poor.

Some of Don Cherry's actions are that he uses humor to promote his ideas so that other people will like his ideas better. Don Cherry sometimes make a place where kids can come and have fun for free.

Don Cherry has accomplished many things in his life such as a great hockey career and coaching career. Now "Hockey Night In Canada" is where he broadcasts with co-workers and it is one of the most watched shows in Canada. On it, he talks about players, teams and major games.

Don Cherry displays character traits such as courage, respect, responsibility and he is also a really nice person. He is courageous because he donates money to different causes all year round. He respects all of his co-workers and the NHL players except for a few that disrespect him like Alexander Ovechkin. He is responsible because he always comes to work prepared and looking like a business man with his fancy tie and suit. He is a nice person because he goes on cruises with people and enjoys spending time with people.

Don Cherry influences me because he is a generous man. He donates money so that seniors can have a better and longer life. He is also a huge hockey fan like me. He encourages anyone and everyone that they can do anything if they put their minds to it.

Don Cherry is my hero because of all the amazing things he has done. He is one of my greatest heroes in hockey and he always will be!
