To me a hero is a person who does something for others, isn't self centered.  Too many people in this world do things only for themselves. My hero, Darrell Green has those traits, and that's why I chose to do my hero project on him. Darrell was born February 14, 1960, he is 52. Darrell made a difference by creating the YLF (Youth Life Foundation), for under privileged children. Darrell, on his way home from a party, was brought to tears because of what he saw; children with no warm clothes who were coping with hopeless family, social and educational problems; who didn't have a sense of family, educational and social skills or moral values; and who didn't see a purpose in life and didn't have hope.

Darrell Green holds many NFL records. Green had lots of "most" records; first, most seasons with a single team (20 seasons), also, he had the most consecutive seasons with an interception (19 seasons), lastly, he had the most seasons touching the ball at least once (receptions, rushes, returns, etc.) (20 seasons with at least one touch). Darrell also had lots of "oldest" records. His first oldest record is, the oldest player with a 35+ yard gain, also, he is the oldest player (at 35) that got a pick 6 in overtime (for anybody that doesn't know what a pick 6 is, it's an interception returned for a touchdown).  Along with that, he is the oldest player to get an interception (41 years old), that last oldest record is, he was the oldest player to get an 80+ yard interception return. He also was a 4 time NFL's fastest man competition winner.

Darrell Green has had a lot of honors. In 1999, while still playing football, he was ranked 81st on "The Sporting News" top 100  Greatest Football Players. Also, in 2004, he was inducted to the College Hall of Fame, and in 2008 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, "This is so incredible. It's so special. This literally transcends football, everything I have gone through to do what I was able to do. It was more than the ability to run and cover. It just goes so far beyond that." quoted from Darrell Green being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Another honor is, in December 2007, he was voted the All-Time Redskins Legend. Green has also been inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Javelina Hall of Fame, the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor, and NCAA Division II Hall of Fame. As you can see, Green has had many honors.

Darrell Green was an excellent hero, not only in his football career, but helping underprivileged children through his foundation. Green holds many NFL records.  It's hard just to get one, but he has multiple. Also, Darrell has many honors, such as being ranked 81st in the top 100 football players. We need more people like Darrell, more people to look up to for good things, not just how famous someone is, or how good someone is at a sport, but while doing all that, he is helping others. A hero isn't just a person that is good at something.  That's what most people think it is, but they are wrong.  Any athlete in any professional sport could be amazing at it, but not very many help others while doing it. That's why Darrell Green is my hero.
