Devin Hester

by Chase from Glenbrook Middle School

"Whenever I'm called on, I just want to make the play at the right time. I want to step up and do my best." - Devin Hester

Devin Hester is no ordinary wide receiver from the Chicago Bears. Sure, nobody can tell that someone is talented or special by just looking at him or her or knowing their name, you have to get to know them, and Devin Hester is someone who you should really get to know. Something you should really know is that Devin Hester used to be one of the most productive kick returners in the NFL and is still one of the most successful wide receivers in the league. Hester also holds 9 different records that he set all in his rookie year from kick returning. Hester is one of the most inspiring people in my life because he gave me hope for my home team, the Chicago Bears. Devin joined the Bears when they him needed most; the Bears most of the time had a losing record and hadn't been to a Super Bowl since 1985 when they won it for the first time. Hester was a huge contributing factor to their winning season in 2006 and led them to the Super Bowl. Devin Hester is a successful, strong, and persistent player.

What makes Devin Hester a hero? Well, for starters Devin Hester holds 9 records that he achieved all in his rookie year. He was also one of the most productive kick returners in the NFL, still holding the record for the most kicks returned for a touchdown in a season, which is six. Records including most kicks returned for a touchdown (6), longest play (108 yards), most touchdown returns in one game (2, which he achieved twice), and most touchdown returns as a rookie (6). Devin led his team in receiving yards and touchdowns in 2007 and 2008. He was very also charitable, donating $500,000 to the Children's Miracle Network, when his favorite nephew discovered he had a brain tumor at age 9, in 2008. He not only wanted to help his nephew, but also other kids, going through the same challenges his nephew was. Hester, along with many other members of his team, was also in a charity fashion show to raise money for the American Cancer society, on November 5th 2007.

Devin Hester was inspired to play football by the legendary running back, Walter Payton, who actually played for the Chicago Bears as well. He wanted to be a running back just like him, or if that didnt work out he wanted to play on defense. Unfortunately, he didn't become what he wanted to but he still became an excellent ball player for the Bears. Devin Hester made a huge difference in my life when he joined the Chicago Bears in 2006 and made history. He gave the Bears hope to be better team, and gave them a chance to go to the 2006 Super Bowl. Though they lost to the Indianapolis Colts, the 2006 season was one of their best seasons in years, almost as good as their 1985 season, when they won their first and only Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. When I saw Devin play, I gave the Bears another chance, and I've become a much bigger fan of the Bears because of Hester.

As you can see Devin Hester easily fits the description of a hero. Not only is he a hero because of his sports career, but he also donates large amounts of money each year to Childrens Miracle Network, to help his nephew and other kids who havent had the best luck. Devin Hester has given the Bears one of their best players in years, a record setting player, and an all around great ballplayer. Devin Hester will always be one of the most inspiring people in my life. "Whenever I'm called on, I just want to make the play at the right time. I want to step up and do my best."
